Forgiveness is something many of us talk about, but few truly understand the weight and beauty of it. We often hear people say, “Forgiveness is for you, not for them,” and that’s absolutely true. But what’s also true—and doesn’t get said enough—is that forgiveness can be just as much for the other person, too. When God calls us to forgive, He’s not just trying to heal us from bitterness or pain. He’s also trying to keep us from being a hindrance in someone else’s journey toward salvation.

Let’s break this down. You may be walking around thinking you have time to forgive someone who hurt you, disrespected you, or betrayed you. You might be thinking, “I’ll deal with it later.” But what if they don’t have a later? What if that person you’re holding resentment toward doesn’t wake up tomorrow? Would you be okay knowing that you never made peace—not just for yourself, but for their soul? That’s why forgiveness is serious. That’s why it’s necessary.

The Bible tells us in Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV), “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” That’s not just a suggestion—that’s a condition. God doesn’t play about forgiveness because He knows the damage unforgiveness can do to our spirit and to someone else’s.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean you have to welcome someone back into your life. It doesn’t mean you have to sit at the same table or call them every day. But what it does mean is that you’ve released the burden from your heart. You’ve given it to God and said, “Lord, I’m not going to carry this pain anymore.” You pray for them. You ask God to search their heart the same way you ask Him to search yours. You say, “God, make them better. Heal them. Help them to be who You’ve called them to be.”

When we forgive, we show God that we have a heart like His. That we want to see others make it, even those who have done us wrong. That’s powerful. That’s Christ-like love. Remember when Jesus was hanging on the cross? He had been beaten, mocked, and betrayed. Yet in His final moments, He said in Luke 23:34, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Jesus didn’t hold on to bitterness. He understood that the pain He was experiencing had a purpose. It was for the glory of God. And through it all, He still prayed for the very people who caused Him harm.

If you say you love the Lord, if you say you want to live like Christ, then forgiveness has to be a part of your life. It’s not optional. Romans 12:19-21 tells us, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath… Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” That means we’re not supposed to carry hate, plan revenge, or sit around hoping people get what they deserve. That’s not our job. Our job is to love. To forgive. To represent God in all we do.

Forgiveness also opens doors for your blessings. God promises so many things to His children—peace, favor, abundance—but sometimes we block those blessings because we’re holding on to offense. You can’t hold grace in one hand and a grudge in the other. Let it go so God can give you what He’s been trying to place in your life.

And let me tell you, when you truly forgive, something inside you shifts. You feel lighter. You see clearer. You’re no longer carrying around the heaviness of someone else’s actions. And even more beautiful—you become a bridge, not a barrier, for someone to find Christ.

So today, forgive. Not just for you. Not just for your peace of mind. But also for them. Because you never want to have blood on your hands. You never want to be the reason someone couldn’t find Jesus. Love them enough to let it go. Love God enough to obey Him. And love yourself enough to walk in freedom.
