Heather, a college student, asked if it’s okay to wash her clothes with Dawn dish detergent since she ran out of laundry detergent.

Using a very small amount might work in a pinch, but there are still some risks. Dawn is designed for dishes, not fabrics, so even a little can create excessive suds, leave a soapy residue, or potentially irritate skin. If you do decide to use a small amount, make sure to:

  1. Use the absolute minimum—maybe a teaspoon for a full load.
  2. Run an extra rinse cycle to remove any soap residue.
  3. Avoid using it on delicate fabrics, wool, or anything labeled “dry clean only.”

It’s really a temporary fix—getting proper laundry detergent as soon as possible is the safest option.

Here’s a list of household items you can use safely as a temporary laundry detergent substitute:

  1. Baking Soda – Helps clean and deodorize clothes. Use about ½ cup per load.
  2. Washing Soda – Stronger than baking soda, helps remove stains and dirt. Use about ¼–½ cup per load.
  3. Borax – Natural mineral that boosts cleaning power. Use about ¼ cup per load.
  4. Castile Soap – Gentle, plant-based soap that can be grated or liquid. Use about 1–2 tablespoons per load.
  5. Shampoo (mild, not anti-dandruff) – Use a very small amount (1 teaspoon) for a small load in a pinch.
  6. Soap Nuts – Natural, reusable soap source. Place 4–6 in a small bag in the washer.

Tips:

  • Always use small amounts to avoid excess suds.
  • Run an extra rinse cycle if using something that suds a lot.
  • Avoid strong dish soaps like Dawn unless it’s a last-resort and used minimally.
