In a world saturated with entertainment, many of us have become accustomed to using reality television as a form of relaxation, laughter, or even inspiration. But for those who are sincerely walking with Christ, it’s time to pause and ask—is this glorifying God or grieving His Spirit? God has a clear message for His people: Be separate from the world.
God doesn’t just call us to follow Him; He calls us to be set apart. When we fill our minds and hearts with chaos, drama, lust, and pride—all of which are common themes in most reality shows—we are not making room for the Spirit of God to work in us. We are contaminating the temple that is meant to be holy.
Scripture Speaks Loud and Clear
2 Corinthians 6:17 reminds us of God’s directive:
“Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.”
This verse isn’t a suggestion; it’s a command. God is calling His people to not just avoid sin, but to remove themselves from environments that breed it. Reality TV often promotes vanity, dishonesty, sexual immorality, and an obsession with materialism. These are not light things. They are dangerous seeds that, once planted, can grow and pull a person further away from their spiritual purpose.
James 4:4 takes it a step further:
“Don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.”
Watching drama-filled shows and defending them as harmless entertainment may seem small, but spiritually, it aligns us with values that contradict God’s Word. If the world celebrates it, flaunts it, and worships it, we must be extremely cautious. God’s people are not meant to blend in with the world—they’re called to shine as lights in the darkness (Philippians 2:15).
What’s in Your Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is always ready to pour into us wisdom, love, patience, and godly direction. But what happens when we try to pour junk into the same space? If your spirit is being filled with drama, betrayal, vulgarity, and self-glorification, how can the fruit of the Spirit thrive?
Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
Reality shows often display the exact opposite of this. Instead of love, there is hate. Instead of peace, there is chaos. Instead of self-control, there is indulgence. By constantly consuming these shows, we are allowing those spirits to minister to us rather than the Holy Spirit. And let’s be honest—it begins to show in our attitudes, speech, and thoughts.
Guarding the Eye and Ear Gates
The Bible warns us in Proverbs 4:23,
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
How do things get into our heart? Through our eyes and ears. What we watch and what we listen to impacts our thoughts and our decisions. Reality television, while labeled as “just for fun,” often influences how people think about relationships, self-worth, and success. It feeds unrealistic expectations and causes many to imitate lifestyles that are unbiblical and damaging.
Psalm 101:3 says,
“I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.”
If we truly want God to fill us, we must make room by turning off the things that are draining our spirit. The Holy Spirit cannot cohabitate with sin. We either surrender fully to God or give the enemy legal ground through our compromise.
A Call to Holiness
Romans 12:2 says,
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
God is not asking us to live boring lives. He is asking us to live holy ones. Holiness isn’t about perfection, but about being dedicated to God. That means we take inventory of our lives and ask tough questions. Is this show helping me grow spiritually? Would I watch this if Jesus were sitting next to me?
We live in a generation that glorifies foolishness. People are becoming famous for being loud, rude, and reckless. That’s not what the Kingdom of God is about. Matthew 7:13-14 reminds us that the gate to life is narrow, and few find it. If we are serious about walking with God, we must make the hard choices—even if it means walking away from the things we once enjoyed.
Final Thoughts
God is calling His people to a higher standard. He’s not trying to restrict us; He’s trying to protect us. If the Holy Spirit has been tugging at your heart about your entertainment choices, don’t ignore it. That conviction is a gift. Don’t let temporary pleasure pull you away from eternal purpose.
So, the next time you’re tempted to tune into a reality show filled with gossip, sexual immorality, or pride, ask yourself: Is this feeding my spirit, or feeding my flesh? You can’t walk with God and still hold on to the world. Let it go and let God fill every space in your life.
