In today’s world, more and more people are turning to self-employment through gig economy platforms like Uber Eats. For many, this is not a side hustle—it is their primary source of income, the means by which they feed their families, pay their bills, and survive. But what happens when even that source of income is restricted by the very company that provides it?

Uber Eats has implemented a 12-hour driving limit—and while on the surface it may seem like a policy meant to promote safety, the truth is that it is severely impacting the livelihood of thousands of self-employed drivers. Even worse, the app often fails to reset after 12 hoUber Has A 12 Hour Limit!urs, leaving drivers locked out for extended periods without income and no explanation. For those who rely on every hour to make ends meet, this restriction isn’t just inconvenient—it’s crippling.

A Cry for Help and a Call to God

This is truly a time when we must lift our eyes and ask God to help us find other ways to provide. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

When our income is threatened and uncertainty creeps in, it’s easy to panic. But God should always be Plan A. He is the ultimate provider, not Uber, not an app, and not a company. Our job is to be faithful, to trust, and to act with wisdom.

Yes, it’s important to have a Plan B and Plan C—whether that means picking up other gig work, starting a small business, or finding another stream of income—but faith in God is what must fuel every plan we make.

The Real Problem with the 12-Hour Cap

The 12-hour limit doesn’t take into account the nature of being self-employed in a volatile market. Drivers often wait for orders in between rides, spend time looking for hotspots, or take breaks during slow hours. All of this counts against their clock. So in reality, they might only be actively working 6 to 8 hours, but the app sees 12 hours of logged-in time and shuts them down.

On top of that, the timer often does not reset at midnight or even after 24 hours, leaving drivers in limbo. There is no one to talk to. There is no real customer service. You’re forced to “chat” with bots or send emails that never get answered. For a company that claims to empower drivers, there is very little empowerment to be found.

The Bible says in 1 Timothy 5:18, “The worker deserves his wages.” When systems fail to allow hard-working individuals to earn what they’ve worked for, something is wrong. God sees the injustice, and He hears the cries of the workers who are being pushed down.

Lack of Customer Service: The Silent Breakdown

In any business, customer service is the backbone. If a business fails to support its workers or its clients, it will collapse from the inside. Uber and Uber Eats drivers have long complained about the absence of true support. There’s no phone line, no real-time assistance, and no escalation process when major problems occur.

Psalm 82:3 says, “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.” Many drivers fall into this category—working long hours to support children, families, or aging parents. To deny them support when issues arise is not only poor business—it is unjust.

What Can Drivers Do?

This situation is pushing many to the edge, and it’s time for a shift in how we respond.

  1. Put God First: Don’t let panic and frustration steal your peace. Pray, seek wisdom, and ask God to show you other streams of income and creative solutions. He promises in Philippians 4:19 that “God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory.”
  2. Have a Backup Plan: Whether that means signing up for other platforms, doing delivery work for local restaurants, or launching your own small service business—diversify. Don’t put your trust in one company.
  3. Speak Out and Stay United: Many drivers feel alone, but collective voices can lead to change. Share your experiences on forums, news outlets, or social media and tag the company. When the company sees unity among drivers, it forces them to listen.
  4. Pray for Strength and Wisdom: Every day out on the road is a test of endurance and faith. Ask God to give you grace and discernment as you navigate the gig economy.

Final Thoughts

We are living in a time where the systems of this world are failing, and many of us are being forced to rely on God in deeper ways. That’s not a bad thing—it’s a call to faith. If you’re a driver, don’t give up. Your work matters. Your struggle is seen. But most importantly, God is your provider, and He is faithful to lead you into something greater when one door closes.

As Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Let us pray. Let us plan. And let us push forward—with God leading the way.
