Losing weight, choosing healthier foods, and exercising is not just about vanity—it’s about stewardship. Hebrews 12:11 tells us, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” Discipline in caring for our bodies is part of living a life that honors God.
Jesus said in Matthew 16:25, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” In a very real sense, losing weight and gaining health is a form of spiritual discipline. Sometimes, to lose is to gain—to lose weight is to gain health, energy, and more time to fulfill God’s purpose. Another area God desires to transform is our speech—particularly the habit of gossiping. Many come to God with a tongue trained to gossip, spread rumors, and tear others down. But God wants us to leave that behavior behind. Proverbs 16:28 warns, “A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.” Gossip is divisive, destructive, and displeasing to God.
People often gossip to feel included or important, to feel that they have a place within a group. It creates a false sense of connection, but it’s counterfeit unity. God calls us to true community, not built on tearing others down but on building each other up. Ephesians 4:29 says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
We must remember that life in Christ is a battlefield. Gossip is a distraction that weakens us spiritually. Like a fighter in a boxing ring, we must stay focused and disciplined. Entertaining gossip is like stepping out of the ring, leaving yourself exposed to defeat. God is about victory—1 Corinthians 15:57 declares, “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” James 1:26 further warns, “Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.” If we are serious about our faith, our speech must reflect that seriousness. We must fight to speak life, not death; to build, not destroy.
In conclusion, God’s call to “come as you are” is an invitation to start the journey, not to camp in the same condition forever. Whether it is our past sins, our appearance, our health, or our speech, God desires transformation. He calls us to holiness, to discipline, to a life that visibly and invisibly reflects His glory. As Romans 12:1 urges, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Coming as you are is the beginning. Letting God change you is the victory.
