If someone’s on SSI and their boyfriend is the one paying the rent, yeah, that can be an issue. SSI is meant to help cover your basic needs like food and shelter, so if Social Security sees that somebody else is paying those things for you, they usually cut down your check. They call it “in-kind support,” but really it just means you’re getting free help with your bills.

Normally, if you live with someone and don’t pay your share, SSI can knock about a third off your monthly amount. So instead of the full $943, the person might only get around $629.

Now, if they set it up as a real rental situation — like there’s an agreement that the SSI person pays their fair part of the rent to the boyfriend — then Social Security might leave the check alone. But if they’re just living there and not paying anything, Social Security can say they were overpaid.

That’s where the trouble comes in. If Social Security finds out later, they can go back months or even years and demand the extra money back. That can turn into thousands of dollars they’ll want repaid. And if they think it was hidden on purpose, it can get even more serious.

So yeah, it’s not automatically “illegal,” but it can backfire if it isn’t set up the right way or if it wasn’t reported.
