When most people hear the word leadership, they think about power, position, or control. They picture someone standing at the front, giving orders, and everyone else following. But that’s not what true leadership looks like in the eyes of God. Leadership, especially spiritual leadership, is not about being in charge—it’s about being available, willing to sacrifice, and putting others before yourself.

Leadership Means Sacrifice

To be a leader for the Lord, you have to be willing to let go of some things. That might mean letting go of personal ambitions, comfort, or even certain relationships that pull you away from God’s calling. Jesus said in Matthew 16:24 (KJV), “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” A leader can’t lead if they are still clinging tightly to the things of the world.

Sacrifice is never easy. We live in a culture where everyone wants more—more recognition, more possessions, more influence. But God calls leaders to walk a different path. When you’re leading for Him, it’s not about how much you can get, but how much you’re willing to give up so others can see Christ through you.

Leadership Means Service

The best example of leadership we have is Jesus Christ Himself. He didn’t walk around with soldiers behind Him or a crown on His head while He lived on earth. Instead, He served. Mark 10:45 (KJV) says, “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

Think about that. Jesus, the Son of God, came to serve. That’s why people trusted Him, loved Him, and followed Him. They knew He would be there. When the blind called out to Him, He stopped. When the sick touched the hem of His garment, He healed them. When the hungry came, He fed them. That’s leadership—not demanding attention, but being available whenever people are in need.

As leaders, we have to ask ourselves: Am I serving others, or am I only serving myself? If the answer leans toward self, then it’s time to realign with God’s Word.

Leadership Means Letting Go of What Doesn’t Matter

Many of us waste time praying for things that don’t matter. We pray for worldly attention, material gain, or approval from others. But Jesus warned us about this in Matthew 6:19–20 (KJV): “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”

Worldly things fade. Recognition doesn’t last. But what you do for God—how you serve, how you love, how you lead—those things remain forever. A leader knows how to let go of distractions and focus on what truly matters: advancing God’s Kingdom.

When you spend your prayer time asking God for things you don’t need, you’re actually robbing yourself of deeper fellowship with Him. Instead of always asking, “Lord, give me this,” try saying, “Lord, thank You for what I already have.” Gratitude shifts the heart, and when your heart shifts, your leadership becomes stronger because you’re no longer focused on self but on God.

Leadership Means Thankfulness

The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV), “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” Notice, it doesn’t say, “In the good things give thanks.” It says, “In everything.” A thankful leader is a powerful leader, because gratitude opens the door for God’s presence to dwell.

When you learn to thank God instead of constantly asking Him for more, you step into a deeper level of faith. You’re saying, “God, I trust You enough to believe that what I have is enough, and if I need more, You will provide.” That’s leadership—leading not out of desperation, but out of trust in God’s provision.

Conclusion: Following Jesus’ Example

At the end of the day, leadership in the Kingdom of God looks very different from leadership in the world. The world says leaders are those who command authority. God says leaders are those who humble themselves and serve. The world says leaders should chase after more. God says leaders should let go of what doesn’t matter and focus on eternity.

Jesus remains the greatest leader who ever lived because He sacrificed, He served, and He loved without limits. If we want to be true leaders for the Lord, we must follow His example. Leadership is not about being in charge—it’s about being present, about sacrificing for the good of others, and about giving thanks to God in all circumstances.

So ask yourself today: Am I leading the way Jesus led? If not, maybe it’s time to let go of the distractions, stop praying for worldly gain, and start thanking God for what you already have. That’s the beginning of true leadership.

This was great words. A person can’t possibly change unless they’re willing. It’s all about having discipline and I think the hardest thing for anybody is to be in a position over people, especially a large amount of people, especially when they’re getting a lot of congratulations to just admit that they’re also falling short from Grace. You have definitely told the whole truth here.

This is why it’s very important for all of us to keep each other encourage on this journey. Being a leader is truly a tough job because most people think it’s all about telling people what to do. In reality it’s about just being available and listening. Because when you truly know what to fix, it can be done.

This is why Jesus said over and over again. It is the heart that he looks for in a person because he knows that if your heart is in the right place, many can be changed. This is very clear. We need to start reading more. Trying to devote our time to show God that we care more about what he wants for us versus our own gain

You are right, but it’s sad because even our government fails to see that people are people and that we’re all not the same and this is why we have so much division

Rebecca Dawson

You are absolutely right. The work that is done on the outside without people knowing is more important than what they do in public. I know that you truly are preaching the word of God and it truly is a blessing to my soul. Even if many don’t know, this has truly transformed me and I will be a witness that this is true words from God. Thank you so much for continuing your hard work because we know it cannot be easy all the time. Love you in Christ ♥️♥️♥️
