Daily Devotional: Doing Good for the Sake of the Gospel

Scripture Reading
Titus 2:1–2 – “You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.”
Devotional Thought
The Apostle Paul’s letter to Titus is more than instructions for a young pastor—it is a call for all believers to live in a way that adorns the gospel. Our faith is not only heard through our words; it is seen in the way we live. Doing good for the sake of the gospel is about letting your life shine so brightly that others see Christ in you before they even hear your testimony.
Paul emphasized sound doctrine, but he didn’t stop at teaching truth—he stressed living truth. A leader, whether in the church, at home, or in the community, is not defined by how much authority they hold, but by how much they are willing to give of themselves for others. A true leader receives less and gives more. They give their time, their patience, their resources, and their love, not because it makes them look good, but because it reflects the goodness of Christ.
A Story for Reflection
There was a small-town pastor who was known for his humility. Every week, before Sunday service, he would rise before dawn to help set up chairs in the fellowship hall. No one asked him to do it, and many didn’t even know it was him. One day, a young man from the community wandered into the church. He had been struggling with addiction and carried shame in his heart. He noticed the pastor quietly stacking chairs, wiping down tables, and preparing the space. The young man asked, “Why are you doing this? Isn’t this someone else’s job?”
The pastor smiled and said, “I do this for the Lord. If serving Him means picking up a broom, then I’ll do it with gladness.” That moment softened the young man’s heart. He later gave his life to Christ—not because of a sermon he heard from the pulpit, but because of the example he saw in a leader who gave more than he received.
This is the power of doing good for the sake of the gospel. The world doesn’t need leaders who demand recognition—it needs leaders who live sacrificially so others may see Christ more clearly.
Biblical Affirmation
“I am called to do good for the sake of the gospel. I will lead with humility, give more than I receive, and let my life reflect the truth of God’s Word. My actions will testify to Christ’s love, and my service will point others to His glory.”
Reflection
- Am I more focused on being seen, or on reflecting Christ?
- In what ways can I give more than I receive this week?
- How can I teach sound doctrine not only with my words but also with my actions?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word that reminds me to live a life worthy of the gospel. Help me to be self-controlled, loving, and enduring in faith. Teach me to serve with humility, to give more than I receive, and to let my good works shine so that others may glorify You. May my leadership never be about position, but about service. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
