I’ve got to get this off my chest because I’m furious right now. I live here in Gulfport, Florida, and I keep hearing the nonsense they’re trying to push on the news about why they’re bringing in all these parking meters. They’re saying it’s because people are supposedly living in their cars on the beach property. Now, I don’t know who believes that lie, but let me tell you something — I live here. I see what goes on, and that’s not the truth. The truth is, after that storm tore through here, our businesses haven’t been doing well. A lot of places are empty, a lot of restaurants are suffering, and the city is looking for a way to make money. That’s what this is really about.

What makes me mad is that they’re using hardworking people as an excuse. They’re trying to say folks are piling up their cars and sleeping on the beach, but that’s not what’s happening. Granted, yeah, there might be a person here or there who’s struggling, maybe on a boat or something, but don’t sit up here and act like the whole town has turned into some kind of car campsite. This is just another way for them to nickel and dime us when most of us are already struggling to pay rent and put food on the table.

Think about it. If they put these meters in, what comes next? More police, more tickets, more traffic headaches. And Gulfport is not that big! The beach area especially is small, and now you’re telling me I’ve got to pay to park just to enjoy the sand and water that’s supposed to be free? And on top of that, I’ve got to pay to eat? Who in their right mind is going to spend money on a sandwich or a meal when you’ve already paid just to put your car in a space? People are not going to do it. They’re going to skip Gulfport, go somewhere else, or better yet, stay home and order from Uber Eats.

And let’s be real. The only reason they’re doing this is because the city is lacking funds. Period. Businesses are not bringing in what they used to. People have been complaining about the quality going downhill since the storm, food not being the same, service not being the same. Folks are choosing other places to spend their money. And instead of Gulfport leaders admitting the truth — that they need to do better for their residents and visitors — they’re trying to cover it up with this story about “people living in cars.”

Let me tell you, the ones who are really going to suffer from this meter mess are the businesses themselves. Once you start charging people to park, they’re going to stop coming. Nobody wants to go through the hassle of paying to park just to pay again to eat, especially when times are this hard. Florida is already too high to live in as it is, and every day we’re scraping by just trying to make it to the next paycheck. The last thing we need is to be charged for going to the beach in our own town.

I’m telling you, this is outrageous. And it breaks my heart because Gulfport used to be a place where you could relax, enjoy the beach, grab some food, and not feel like the city was trying to squeeze you dry. Now it feels like everything is about money, money, money. Pretty soon, I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to charge people for sleeping on their boats, too. That’s how ridiculous this is getting.

So no, I don’t buy the excuse. I know the truth because I live here. They’re not doing this because of cars on the property. They’re doing this because the city is broke, and this is their quick fix. But in the long run, it’s going to backfire. Businesses will fail, the city will still struggle, and residents like me will be left paying the price. And I, for one, am fed up with it.

As a business owner right here in Gulfport, I can tell you firsthand this parking meter plan is going to hurt us badly. We already saw a drop in customers after the storm, and things still haven’t fully recovered. People are being careful with their money, and if they have to pay to park just to grab a bite to eat or shop in our stores, they’re not going to come. They’ll take their money to St. Pete or order online instead.

What the city doesn’t seem to understand is that every barrier they put up makes it harder for small businesses like mine to survive. We rely on locals and visitors, and charging people to park is going to drive them away. It feels like the city is trying to solve its money problems on our backs, and at the end of the day, we’re the ones who will lose out. Glenda is absolutely right — this move is not about people living in cars, it’s about the city scrambling for cash, and they’re about to push businesses like mine over the edge.

Thank you for saying this out loud, Glenda. I’ve been frustrated too because it feels like we’re being punished for living here. Rent is sky-high, groceries are up, and now we’re supposed to pay to park just to enjoy our own city? It’s outrageous. They can spin it however they want on the news, but we know the truth. The city is broke and desperate, and they’re going about this the wrong way. If they keep this up, Gulfport is going to lose the very charm that made people love it in the first place.

I agree with everything you said, Glenda. I was down by the Gulfport beach last weekend, and there were barely any people parked there, certainly not folks living in their cars like they claim. That’s just an excuse. They know their restaurants and bars haven’t been doing well, and they’re trying to patch the holes by making us locals foot the bill. It’s sad because instead of bringing people in, this will just push them away.

Glenda, you hit the nail on the head. I’ve lived here for over 20 years, and this city has changed so much since that storm. Businesses are struggling, and instead of fixing the real issues, the city leaders are just trying to squeeze the locals. Paid parking at the beach is ridiculous! People shouldn’t have to pay to enjoy what God gave us for free. You’re right — it’s nothing but a money grab, and I don’t plan on giving them a dime.
