You know what’s crazy? We’re sitting here in one of the richest countries on Earth, and people are talking about cutting off SNAP benefits because the government can’t get its act together. I’m not even shocked anymore — I’m just disgusted. Every single time there’s a shutdown, it’s always the same story: the people at the bottom pay the price while the politicians still get paid, still eat, still sleep in their cozy homes without a worry in the world.
The USDA already said SNAP is only guaranteed through October. That means if this mess keeps going, come November, families could be left with nothing. No benefits. No food money. No help. And these lawmakers act like that’s not a big deal! You have moms who plan their grocery lists around those benefits, seniors who use them to buy their medicine and still eat, and kids who depend on that food to survive. How dare they play political games with people’s meals?
Texas, Colorado, and Kansas already started warning people that November benefits might not come at all. Imagine reading that when your fridge is already half-empty. The USDA even told states to hold off sending files to EBT vendors — meaning they’re basically pausing the system that loads your card. That’s not a “possibility,” that’s a warning shot. It’s their way of saying, “Y’all might be on your own soon.”
And what are people supposed to do? You can’t stock up when you’re already struggling to get by. You can’t “budget better” when you’re living on the bare minimum. These politicians talk about “tightening belts,” but it’s always our belts that get tightened, never theirs. They’ll spend billions on wars and contracts, but feeding families somehow breaks the budget? It’s sickening.
I know folks who already live meal to meal, stretching one bag of rice to last a week. They’re going to have to turn to food banks that are already overwhelmed. Churches can’t keep up with demand. Shelves are going to go bare fast if this happens. And what then? You think people are just going to sit quietly while their kids go hungry?
Let me tell you what’s really happening: they’re testing how much people will tolerate. How much suffering they can cause before folks finally say “enough.” The poor and working class are always the first to get hit — and the last to be helped. And when November rolls around and those EBT cards don’t load, I guarantee you they’ll go on TV saying, “We’re working on a solution.” Yeah, right. Working on it after millions already went hungry for weeks.
This isn’t politics anymore; it’s cruelty. It’s intentional. Because if they cared, this shutdown wouldn’t even be allowed to threaten programs like SNAP. They’d have automatic protections in place for food, housing, and healthcare. But they don’t — because they don’t care.
If this government really collapses on feeding its own people next month, then everyone who made that decision should have to explain it face-to-face to a hungry family. They should walk through a grocery store with someone trying to make $190 last an entire month and see what that looks like. They should sit in a house where the lights are about to get cut off, and the only food left is ramen noodles and canned corn, and then tell that person, “Sorry, your benefits didn’t process this month.”
I’m angry. I’m frustrated. And honestly, I’m scared for people. Because once those benefits stop, it’s not just hunger — it’s desperation. Desperate people do what they have to do to survive. If the people running this country don’t want chaos, they better fix this before November comes.
Because when a mother can’t feed her child, you’ve crossed a line that no shutdown or party argument can ever justify.
