Neighborhood watch

Hey everyone — it’s Lucie here. I just wanted to talk a little bit about what’s been going on with Medium lately, because honestly, something feels different. I’ve been writing and reading there for a few years, and I can’t help but notice how quiet things have gotten. It used to be that when you posted something decent, you’d see some activity — a few reads, a handful of claps, maybe a comment or two. But now? It feels like you’re just talking into the wind.

I started looking around and realized I’m not the only one feeling this way. A lot of people who’ve been writing on Medium for years are saying the same thing: views are dropping, engagement is slowing down, and even loyal readers seem to be fading away. Some people say traffic has been falling for a couple of months straight, and it’s starting to show across different topics and categories.

From what I can tell, there are a few reasons behind it. First, Medium’s algorithm just doesn’t push stories like it used to. The “For You” feed feels stale, and it’s harder to discover new writers. Then there’s the issue with search traffic — it seems like Google isn’t sending as many people to Medium as before. That’s a huge deal because a lot of writers relied on that visibility. On top of that, I think people are just spreading out more now. They’re going to Substack, YouTube, or even smaller independent sites where they have more control and a better connection with their audience.

I don’t think Medium is finished — not at all. But it definitely doesn’t feel like the exciting hub it once was. It’s like the energy has faded, and people are quietly slipping away without making a big deal out of it. If you still write there, you can make it work, but you have to be realistic. Don’t depend on Medium alone to get your work seen.

These days, it’s smarter to post in a few places — maybe build your own blog, start a newsletter, or connect directly with your readers through email or social media. Medium can still be part of your plan, but it shouldn’t be the whole plan.

That’s just how I see it. Maybe some of you have noticed the same drop in engagement or traffic. Have you moved on to other platforms, or are you sticking with Medium and hoping things turn around? I’d really love to hear what other writers think about where it’s heading.

— Lucie

Hey Lucie, I completely agree with you. I’ve been on Medium for a while now, and I’ve definitely seen the pay drop too. Back in 2022 and 2023, I could make around $100 to $150 a month just from a few solid articles. Now, I’m lucky if I hit $20, even when I’m getting the same number of reads. It’s like the payouts per minute read have tanked, and nobody really knows why. I still post because I enjoy writing, but financially, it’s not what it used to be. Medium just doesn’t pay like it once did.
