Let’s stop pretending that TikTok is innocent. People love to act like TikTok is the “better” or “freer” platform compared to YouTube or Instagram, but I’m sorry — it’s not. In fact, it might be worse. Behind all those viral videos and dance trends, there’s a dark side that people don’t want to talk about. It’s time someone does.
Let’s start with the obvious: China owns it. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is based in Beijing. And yes, that means the Chinese government has a say in how things run. You can spin it however you want, but that’s just the truth. Do we really think a platform controlled by a communist government that censors its own people is somehow giving Americans or anyone else a “free voice”? Be serious. They control what gets seen, what gets said, and what trends go viral — and we all just go along with it like hypnotized robots.
And what’s crazy is, people are so quick to bash YouTube, Instagram, or Facebook for data collection and censorship (and rightfully so), but they give TikTok a pass. Why? Because it’s trendy? Because the filters are cute and the videos are short? That’s not freedom — that’s distraction. While people are laughing at cat videos and lip-sync challenges, TikTok is quietly collecting mountains of data — your face, your voice, your location, your habits, even the way you move your fingers on the screen. And all that information? It’s not staying in your country.
YouTube shadow bans. Instagram hides posts. Facebook manipulates feeds. But TikTok? TikTok rewrites the entire idea of manipulation. Their algorithm doesn’t just “recommend” content — it decides who you become online. It studies you like a science project, learns your weaknesses, and then feeds you more of what keeps you addicted. That’s not entertainment — that’s control.
People don’t even realize how deep it goes. Every trend, every viral sound, every challenge — it’s all part of a bigger picture. TikTok isn’t just influencing what people watch, it’s influencing how people think. What’s worse is how political content gets filtered. Say something against China or certain ideologies, and suddenly your views drop to zero. Post a dance, and you’re trending by morning. Does that sound like freedom of expression to you?
And before anyone says, “But Jessica, YouTube does the same thing!” — I agree. That’s the point. None of these platforms are clean. They’re all playing the same dirty game, just with different flags and logos. The difference is that TikTok doesn’t even pretend to be transparent. They hide behind “fun” and “community,” while quietly controlling what you see and what you think.
It’s not just about politics — it’s about power. The power to control attention, culture, and minds. And when a foreign government has that kind of influence over millions of people in other countries, that’s not social media — that’s social engineering.
I’m not saying people shouldn’t use TikTok at all. If you want to have fun, post your dances, share your recipes — fine. But don’t fool yourself into thinking it’s safe or fair. It’s no better than YouTube, Meta, or Twitter. They all claim to give you a “voice,” but what they’re really doing is using your voice to make money — or worse, to study you.
I’m just tired of the lies. Tired of people defending platforms that clearly don’t care about users. Tired of creators working hard only to get censored or manipulated by invisible algorithms that decide who deserves to be seen.
TikTok might look shiny on the surface, but underneath it’s the same mess — just packaged differently. Don’t be fooled by the filters. They might make you look good, but they’re blinding you from what’s really going on.
