Excerpt: I’m sorry, but this is beyond ridiculous. A former New York state trooper lies about being shot by a “Black or dark-skinned man,” shoots himself, and only gets six months in jail? Meanwhile, Jussie Smollett got more for his fake story—and he wasn’t even a police officer. How is this justice? How is this fair?

Thomas J. Mascia is a former member of the New York State Police (“NYS Troopers”) who has become widely known for staging his own shooting and then falsely reporting it as an attack by an armed motorist.

So, let’s just get this straight. A man who was supposed to uphold the law—represent it, even—literally shot himself in the leg, made up a whole story about being attacked by a “Black or dark-skinned male,” and then wasted police time, resources, and public trust… and he gets six months in jail? Six. Months. That’s it?

I don’t care how anyone tries to spin this—it’s absurd. Thomas J. Mascia, a former state trooper, knew exactly what kind of chaos this could cause. He didn’t just tell a random lie. He made a false report that directly targeted Black men, feeding into dangerous stereotypes that could’ve gotten innocent people harassed, detained, or even killed if police started rounding up suspects who “fit the description.”

Let’s remember something here: when Jussie Smollett made up his story about being attacked, he was crucified by the media and got jail time, fines, and permanent career damage. And let’s be real—he deserved some consequences for lying. But the difference? Smollett isn’t a cop. He doesn’t hold a badge, he doesn’t represent the justice system. Mascia did. That’s the part that makes this even worse.

This man was supposed to serve and protect. Instead, he abused that position to fabricate a racist story that could have caused real harm to the community he once swore to protect. That’s not just lying—that’s weaponizing race, authority, and fear for attention or sympathy. It’s disgusting.

And yet, here we are, watching him walk away with a slap on the wrist. Six months? That’s less than some people get for petty theft. People are sitting in jail longer than that for driving without a license or missing a court date. But a former state trooper who faked being shot by a Black man? Oh, he gets half a year and probably probation after that.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but justice isn’t supposed to look like this. If the justice system truly believed in accountability, this man would’ve faced years, not months. Because this wasn’t just a “mistake” or “poor judgment.” This was a calculated act that could’ve ignited racial tension and put real people in danger.

And here’s the kicker: every time something like this happens, it makes it that much harder for people to trust the police. When an officer lies—especially in a way that targets a racial group—it tears down decades of progress and gives people more reasons to fear instead of trust.

So yes, I’m mad. I’m furious, actually. Because the double standard is screaming loud and clear. A celebrity lies, and it’s national news, career over, maximum punishment. A cop lies, and the system quietly pats him on the back with “time served.” It’s not justice—it’s hypocrisy with a badge.

If we want to talk about accountability, it can’t just apply to civilians or public figures. It has to apply to everyone, especially those wearing uniforms. Because if they can get away with something like this and only serve six months, what message does that send? That it’s okay to fake a crime, lie about a Black suspect, and still walk away with your dignity intact? No.

Our justice system failed again. And the worst part? It keeps failing in the same direction—against truth, against fairness, and against accountability. Six months is a joke, and it’s not funny.

$289,000 in restitution sounds like a lot, but it’s still not enough. How do you even put a price tag on the fear and chaos this stunt caused?

Darren

Bro really said, “lemme ruin my career and frame an imaginary Black dude for it.” 💀 You can’t make this stuff up.

Kim

It’s wild how they gave him less time than Jussie Smollett, who didn’t even carry a gun or put lives at risk. One lied for attention, the other lied with a gun in his hand but guess who walks faster? 😒

MikeStraightShooter

What’s crazy is, if a civilian made a false report like that, they’d be facing YEARS in prison. The badge shouldn’t be a shield for stupidity.

Maya Jones

Exactly. And people still wonder why folks don’t trust law enforcement. This man could’ve easily gotten some innocent person killed if police had pulled over the wrong “dark-skinned” driver that night.

VanzLife25

So let me get this straight… he shoots himself, blames a “Black man,” causes an entire manhunt, wastes thousands of taxpayer dollars and gets six months? This justice system is a joke. 🤦🏽‍♀️
