Y’all, my neck feels like it’s been locked in a vise! 😩 After my chiropractor appointment, the pain went from mild to unbearable — stiff neck, tight shoulders, and headaches that won’t quit. It’s been a week, and instead of feeling better, I’m barely able to move. I don’t know if the chiropractor over-adjusted or if something deeper is wrong, but it hurts all the way down my shoulder blades. I’m starting to wonder if I need an x-ray because this just isn’t normal.

Let me tell y’all something, I am in PAIN. Like, real, can’t-turn-my-head kind of pain. My neck feels like someone twisted it, froze it in place, and then said, “Good luck, girl.” 😩 I’m not exaggerating. It’s been days of this, and now it’s not just my neck it’s all up in my shoulders, creeping down into my upper back near my shoulder blades. Every morning I wake up, and I can tell it’s gonna be another bad day because that stiffness hits me before I even sit up. And on top of that, I’m starting to get headaches.
Here’s the part that’s really throwing me off: this all started after I went to a chiropractor appointment. I’ve gone before, and usually I feel loose, relaxed, maybe a little sore the next day but nothing like THIS. This time, though? It’s like my body said, “Nope, we’re not doing this again.” It’s been about a week, and instead of improving, it feels worse.
I’ve tried heating pads, stretching, massaging with those little handheld things nothing’s helping. I even changed my pillow, thinking maybe I was sleeping wrong. But it doesn’t matter how I lay; the stiffness is there. It’s like something is off inside my neck, like it’s not sitting right or maybe got strained.
What’s weird is that the chiropractor did adjust my neck this last time, and it cracked louder than usual. It was that kind of crack that makes you freeze like, “Did that sound right?” I didn’t say anything at the moment because I thought maybe that’s how it’s supposed to sound. But now I’m wondering if something got pulled or misaligned even more.
I’m not one to panic, but this doesn’t feel like regular soreness. My range of motion is limited — I can’t even look over my shoulder without wincing. The muscles feel tight, like they’re pulling against each other. Sometimes when I turn my head too fast, it sends a shooting pain down my back.
So now I’m at the point where I’m wondering if I need to go to the ER, or at least get an x-ray or MRI just to make sure nothing’s wrong. Because this is not normal for me. I keep thinking maybe it’s my posture, maybe I slept wrong, or maybe the chiropractor did something that my body didn’t agree with. But whatever it is, I’m tired of guessing — I just want relief.
If anyone’s experienced something like this after a chiropractor visit, please tell me what you did. Did you see a doctor? Did you rest it out? I can’t keep going like this because this neck pain is giving me anxiety. Every time I move, I feel it. Something’s definitely not right. 😔

Hi Karla,
First of all — I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Based on what you described, it sounds like your neck and upper back muscles are in a state of protective spasm, which can happen after a chiropractic adjustment if the tissues become overstressed or irritated. Normally, post-adjustment soreness lasts only 24 to 48 hours, so if it’s been a week and you’re still feeling intense stiffness and headaches, it’s definitely time to take action.
Here’s what might be going on: during a spinal adjustment, your muscles and ligaments are stretched quickly. If your neck muscles were already tight or inflamed before the session, the adjustment could’ve triggered a deeper irritation or even a minor soft tissue strain. That’s why you’re feeling the pain radiate into your shoulders and shoulder blades — those muscles (like the trapezius and levator scapulae) all connect to your neck.
The headache you mentioned is likely a tension headache, caused by tight muscles pulling at the base of your skull. It’s common when the neck muscles are inflamed. But because you also mentioned the pain getting worse and your range of motion decreasing, I’d strongly suggest getting checked by a medical doctor ideally one who can order an x-ray or MRI. This will rule out things like a pinched nerve, cervical disc injury, or joint misalignment.
In the meantime, avoid any more chiropractic adjustments until you’ve been evaluated. Sometimes, continued manipulation can make inflammation worse. Instead, try these steps:
- Use cold packs for 15 minutes at a time during flare-ups (especially if it feels hot or swollen).
- Apply gentle heat after 48 hours to relax the muscles, but don’t overdo it.
- Do gentle neck stretches — turn your head slowly side to side, no forcing or jerking.
- Check your posture when sitting — your screen should be eye level, shoulders relaxed, feet flat.
- Sleep on a supportive pillow that keeps your neck aligned with your spine.
If the pain radiates down your arm, you feel numbness, or the headaches worsen, go to urgent care or the ER. Those can be signs of nerve involvement, and it’s better to get checked early.
It’s possible that nothing serious happened, and your muscles just need time and proper care to calm down but persistent or worsening pain after a chiropractic visit is not something to ignore. Trust your instincts and get imaging done to be safe. Your body’s trying to tell you something, and you’re right to listen. Take it easy, and let a medical provider guide your next steps. 💆♀️
