Can y’all believe someone hit an elderly woman in a St. Pete Publix parking lot and just drove off? Joanna’s furious and she’s calling out the heartless driver and the growing carelessness on our streets.

I’m honestly disgusted and heartbroken right now. How could someone hit an elderly woman in a Publix parking lot and just drive off like her life meant nothing? What’s happening to people? This is not just a “mistake” this is pure evil, and St. Pete Police better find that driver fast.

You know what absolutely crushes me about this story? It’s that it didn’t happen on some busy interstate or a reckless highway it happened in a Publix parking lot. A place where people shop for groceries, grab flowers, maybe chat with a neighbor. That’s supposed to be one of the safest, calmest spots in our community. Yet, here we are again, reading another headline about someone’s grandmother losing her life because another human being didn’t have the decency to stop.
This tragedy happened shortly before 5 p.m. at the Publix on 37th Ave. N in St. Petersburg. It’s not some hidden corner lot it’s a well-lit, busy area. Which means whoever did this didn’t just “panic.” They chose to leave. They chose to look in their rearview mirror and keep going after hitting an elderly woman. Can you imagine the level of coldness that takes?
What breaks me most is thinking about her family. She probably went there to grab some dinner items or her weekly groceries, maybe even to buy something for her grandkids. And now, someone has to get that phone call. Someone’s mother, someone’s grandmother, someone’s best friend gone in a parking lot because a coward couldn’t face what they did.
And don’t tell me “people panic.” I get that accidents happen truly, I do. But this wasn’t just an accident anymore once they left. The moment that driver hit the gas and fled the scene, they turned a tragedy into a crime. There’s no excuse for it. You call 911. You render aid. You stay. Period.
The scary part is that these hit-and-run cases are becoming way too common. Every few weeks, it’s something similar: pedestrians, cyclists, people just walking to their car. I don’t know if people are too distracted, too impatient, or just plain careless but it feels like humanity is fading out of folks. And if you can hit someone, see them lying there, and still drive off? That’s not a person with a conscience. That’s a monster with a license.
I hope the St. Petersburg Police get this driver fast. And when they do, I hope the judge looks at them for who they really are not some “scared” motorist but a selfish human being who valued their freedom over a woman’s life. Because I guarantee, that elderly woman didn’t stand a chance. Parking lots are already chaotic, and the elderly move slower everyone knows that. Which is why people need to slow down. No one’s life is worth the few seconds you save rushing to grab your milk and eggs.
Let’s be honest this could’ve been anyone’s grandmother. And what kills me is that she probably trusted her surroundings, thinking she was safe just a few feet from the store entrance. We all think that.
So yeah, I’m angry. Angry that we live in a world where a person can do this and keep going home like nothing happened. Angry that cameras might catch it and still, people don’t learn. And angry that a sweet elderly woman had her life stolen in such a cruel, preventable way.
If you’re reading this and you know something say something. That driver is out there, and silence only helps them sleep at night.
St. Petersburg, we’ve got to do better. These are our streets, our people, our elders. And if we can’t even protect the most vulnerable among us in a Publix parking lot, what does that say about who we’ve become? Rest in peace to that poor woman. I hope justice comes swift and loud. 💔

The way you described it hit home, Joanna. My grandma used to go to that same store every Thursday. It’s supposed to be safe. These drivers don’t realize how much damage they do not just to the victim, but to families, to entire communities.
Publix parking lots are chaos lately people flying through them like they’re racetracks. I always tell my mom to hold onto my arm when we go shopping. This is just heartbreaking. That could’ve been anyone’s mom or grandma.
You said it best this isn’t a “mistake,” it’s a choice. People always blame panic, but if you’ve got enough sense to hit the gas and flee, you’ve got enough sense to stop. Too many cowards out here driving reckless and thinking they’ll get away with it.
This broke my heart, Joanna. I shop at that same Publix all the time, and it’s terrifying to think this could happen in broad daylight. How do you just leave someone like that? I hope the police catch whoever did it soon because that poor woman didn’t deserve this.
