I thought a Virtual Mailbox would make life easier, but between the notary fees, ID uploads, and privacy risks, it turned into a nightmare. 😩 Here’s why I’m sticking with my P.O. Box for good.

I thought a virtual mailbox would make my life easier — but it ended up being one of the biggest hassles I’ve ever signed up for. Between the hidden notary fees, privacy concerns, and all the unnecessary hoops they make you jump through, I honestly wish I’d just stuck with my good old P.O. Box.

A delivery person in a blue shirt hands a cardboard box to a customer at a doorway, while the customer offers a payment card.

So here’s the thing. I thought I was being smart signing up for a Virtual Mailbox, right? They make it sound so convenient — “just $9.99 a month” and you can manage all your mail from your phone. Cute idea… until you realize what they don’t tell you upfront. That little $9.99 price tag is just the bait. Once you actually sign up, here comes the surprise — you’ve got to pay a $25 notary fee just to verify your identity before you can even use the service.

Now, I don’t know about y’all, but that already rubbed me the wrong way. Because if I’m paying a company to handle my mail, why am I paying extra just to prove who I am? The United States Postal Service doesn’t even go that far. Sure, they’ll ask for your ID when you open a P.O. Box, but they’re not making you go find a notary, upload all your documents, and then sit around waiting for approval like you’re applying for a loan.

When I really started breaking it down, it just didn’t make financial sense. My local post office charges me $18 per month for a P.O. Box, and they usually want you to pay for three months upfront. So, okay, that’s like $54 total to start no hidden fees, no creepy notaries, no online uploads of my ID floating around in cyberspace. Meanwhile, a Virtual Mailbox may start at $9.99, but add the $25 notary fee, plus any other random costs they tack on later, and suddenly you’re not saving anything. In fact, you’re paying more for a service that gives you less peace of mind.

But the money isn’t even the worst part. The privacy issue really got me. When I had to go through the notary process, they wanted to see my license, address, and all my personal documents. I didn’t even realize I had sent in my ID to the notary by mistake and now this random person knows my full name, my address, and probably has a copy of my ID sitting in some digital file somewhere. Tell me that doesn’t sound like a nightmare waiting to happen.

You don’t know how many eyes see your ID once you upload it. It’s going through systems, databases, maybe even third-party verification services. And in today’s world, people’s information gets leaked and sold every single day. I didn’t feel safe knowing my identity was being passed around like that just so I could have a fancy “virtual” mailbox that I barely even needed.

To make things worse, the process itself was just too much work. Sending documents, emailing back and forth, verifying with a notary, waiting for confirmation all of that just to get your mail forwarded? 🤦🏽‍♀️ I’m sorry, but no thank you. I’d rather just go to my post office, grab my mail, and move on with my life.

And here’s the real talk they try to make it sound like Virtual Mailboxes are the future, but in reality, they’re just a headache for people who value their security and privacy. When you hand over your ID and address to random online companies, you’re basically opening yourself up to unnecessary risk. Identity theft, spam, even stalking — it happens.

So yeah, lesson learned. If you’re thinking about getting a Virtual Mailbox, don’t do it. Just go the old-school route and set up a P.O. Box through the United States Postal Service. It’s safer, simpler, and honestly, you’ll sleep better at night knowing your information isn’t floating around out there.

Sometimes the traditional way really is the best way. 🙄
