The Tampa community is grieving the loss of 41-year-old Dedrick Lamar Sykes, a well-known and respected DJ in Ybor City, after a roadway dispute ended in a fatal shooting on Friday evening.



According to the Tampa Police Department, the incident occurred just after 7 p.m. near E 5th Avenue and N 22nd Street. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and found Sykes suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Detectives report that the shooting stemmed from a verbal argument between Sykes and another adult man. What began as a roadway dispute quickly escalated, leading to the tragic outcome. The suspect remained at the scene and told investigators the shooting was an act of self-defense.
