Thereโs a growing frustration spreading through the community of East Arcadia, and many residents are starting to ask the same question: why is our elementary school being pushed toward closure?

The discussion about potentially shutting down East Arcadia Elementary School and merging students into Clarkton School of Discovery has people in the community worriedโand frankly, upset. For a small town like East Arcadia, the school is more than just a building where children go to class. It represents stability, local pride, and jobs that families in the area have depended on for years.
Iโm going to be honest, because a lot of people around here are thinking the same thing but nobody wants to say it out loud. What is really going on with them trying to shut down East Arcadia Elementary School here in East Arcadia?
Now theyโre talking about merging the kids over to Clarkton School of Discovery like itโs no big deal. Like this school hasnโt been sitting here for years taking care of generations of families in this town. And Iโll tell you what a lot of people think the real reason is. They just donโt have enough kids left in East Arcadia. Thatโs the truth nobody wants to say.

This town isnโt as big as it used to be. People moved away. Jobs got harder to find. Younger families leave to go somewhere else, and when that happens the number of kids drops. So now the county is looking at the numbers and probably saying itโs easier to just close the school and move everybody somewhere else. But what they donโt understand is this isnโt just about numbers on a piece of paper. This school is jobs for people in this community.
There are teachers who have been working there for years. Teacher assistants. Cafeteria workers. Custodians. Office staff. Some of those people depend on that school for their livelihood. Thatโs how they pay their bills and take care of their families.
So what happens to them?
Do they just expect everybody to magically find another job or start driving way out of town every day? Because thatโs what it sounds like. And another thing people donโt talk about enough is what happens to a small town when the school disappears. Schools are the heart of towns like this. When kids go to school here, families stay connected to the community. Parents show up to events. Teachers know the families. Everybody knows everybody. Thatโs how small towns work.
But when you close the school, you take a big piece of that away. Once that building is gone or empty, itโs not like theyโre going to open it back up five years later. It doesnโt work like that. When a town loses its school, sometimes it starts losing other things too.
People stop moving here. Families look somewhere else to live. The town gets quieter and quieter. And the sad part is people in East Arcadia already feel like the town is struggling enough as it is. So hearing that the elementary school might be closing just feels like another blow. Now donโt get me wrong, I understand the county probably has budgets and numbers theyโre looking at. Running schools costs money. But decisions like this affect real people and real communities. You canโt just look at enrollment charts and ignore everything else.
Because for the people who live here, this isnโt just a building where kids go to class. This is something that has been part of this town for generations. Parents went there. Their kids went there. Some of the teachers probably taught two or three generations of the same family. That means something.
And honestly, a lot of people around here just wish somebody would slow down and actually think about what closing this school would do to East Arcadia before they make a decision that canโt be undone.
Because once the doors close, theyโre probably closed for good. And when that happens, this town will lose more than just a school.
