When it comes to scoring for Pearson, “Conventions” refers to how well a student demonstrates control over the basic rules of writing. This includes grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and sentence structure. However, this is where a lot of new scorers get confused—because you are not grading every single mistake individually.

Instead, Conventions is scored based on the overall control and readability of the response. For example, a student can have a few spelling or punctuation errors and still score well if their writing is clear and easy to understand. On the other hand, if errors are frequent and start to interfere with meaning, the score drops.

It’s also important to understand that Conventions is not about perfection. It’s about consistency and how much the errors affect the reader’s ability to follow the response. Minor issues like spacing or occasional misspellings are often overlooked unless they become distracting.

In short, you’re asking: Can I understand this writing without effort? If yes, the student likely demonstrates stronger control of conventions. If not, then the errors are impacting the overall quality, and the score should reflect that.
