There isn’t a required word count in Pearson scoring, which can be confusing during training. Responses are not graded based on length, but rather on whether the student clearly answers the prompt, uses evidence from the passage, and demonstrates understanding. However, shorter responses often receive lower scores because they may lack enough detail or development, not simply because they are short.
I’ve seen cases where a response wasn’t even a full paragraph but still scored a 2 because it answered the question and included relevant support. This shows that quality matters more than length. At the same time, longer responses can still receive low scores if they are off-topic or do not fully address the prompt.
There should be clearer communication about this so scorers can focus on what truly matters instead of assuming length plays a role.
