In today’s world, many equate faith with outward expressions—acts like preaching in the community, casting out demons, or performing mighty works in the name of God. Some even point to Jesus’ words, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move” (Matthew 17:20), to argue that true faith is defined by bold declarations or miraculous signs. But Scripture reveals a deeper truth: faith is not only about what you do with God’s power, but about trusting Him even when you cannot see, feel, or understand what He is doing.

Faith Is Tested in Doubt, Not Displayed in Power

The disciples offer a sobering reminder that being close to Jesus physically and even operating in His power doesn’t always equal mature faith. These men walked with Jesus, saw Him calm storms, raise the dead, heal lepers, and feed thousands. Yet they often struggled with unbelief.

In Mark 9, a man brought his demon-possessed son to the disciples, but they couldn’t cast it out. Jesus responded with a sharp rebuke: “You unbelieving generation, how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you?” (Mark 9:19). Later, when the disciples asked why they failed, Jesus said, “This kind can come out only by prayer” (Mark 9:29). Though they had previously performed miracles (Mark 6:13), they assumed they could rely on past authority rather than ongoing dependence on God. Their failure revealed that faith is not automatic just because you’ve been used by God before.

Similarly, in Matthew 14:29-31, Peter walked on water toward Jesus. For a moment, he did what no other human has done. But when he saw the wind and waves, he began to sink. Jesus immediately saved him and asked, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” Peter’s faith faltered not when he stepped out in power, but when his eyes turned from Jesus to the storm.

Faith Is Trust Without Seeing

Hebrews 11:1 defines faith this way: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” This shows that true faith isn’t just about the miraculous or the visible—it’s about trusting in God’s promises even when circumstances are unclear or when His presence feels distant.

The same chapter goes on to list heroes of faith—Abraham, Moses, Rahab, and others—not because they performed signs and wonders, but because they obeyed God in uncertainty. Abraham left his homeland “not knowing where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8). Moses forsook Egypt and its riches because he “saw him who is invisible” (v. 27). These examples reveal that great faith often looks more like obedience, surrender, and patience than it does power or public ministry.

Power Without Faith Is Possible—But Dangerous

Jesus gave a strong warning in Matthew 7:22-23: “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”

This is a sobering truth. It is possible to operate in spiritual power without true relationship or faith in Christ. The power of God is real, but faith is more than just being used by God—it’s about knowing Him. These people were doing mighty acts, but Jesus said they didn’t know Him. Faith requires a personal connection to the Savior, not just use of His name.

Faith in Weakness, Not in Show

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” True faith embraces weakness and depends on God’s strength rather than performance. Paul didn’t boast in miracles or crowds. He boasted in his hardships, because they revealed God’s sustaining power.

Conclusion: Faith That Pleases God

Hebrews 11:6 declares, “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” Not without works. Not without miracles. Without faith. Faith that trusts, that waits, that obeys, that clings to God in silence. Yes, casting out demons and moving mountains are powerful expressions—but they are not the measure of spiritual maturity.

Faith is more than using God’s power. It is about resting in His presence, following His direction, and believing His promises—even when you don’t see results. The disciples’ journey teaches us that even those closest to Jesus can still wrestle with belief. But as Jesus said to Thomas, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29).
