The command to honor our father and mother is one of the foundational principles in the Bible, deeply woven into the very fabric of God’s law and order. In Exodus 20:12, the fifth commandment says: “Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” This isn’t just a rule for behavior—it’s a divine key to longevity and blessing. When we obey this command, we align ourselves with God’s order and open the door to a more meaningful and fruitful life.

In Leviticus 19:3, God says, “Each of you must respect your mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbaths. I am the Lord your God.” Notice how He links honoring parents with observing His Sabbath—both acts of respect and submission. This shows us that God values order, respect, and obedience. To truly live a great life, we must do right by God, which includes respecting our parents, whether they were perfect or not.

God is a God of order. In 1 Corinthians 14:33, Paul says, “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace—as in all the churches of the saints.” He expects His children to live with that same sense of divine order, and honoring our parents is a foundational step in that direction. This kind of obedience not only helps keep the peace in our homes but also sets the tone for how we treat others, especially those in authority.

Yet, Jesus added a deeper layer to this teaching during His earthly ministry. While He never diminished the importance of family, He redefined what it means to belong to the family of God. In Matthew 12:48-50, when told that His mother and brothers were waiting for Him, He replied, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Then, pointing to His disciples, He said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

This powerful statement reminds us that spiritual obedience trumps even biological connections. While we’re called to honor our earthly parents, Jesus emphasized that those who do the will of God are His true family. This doesn’t give us permission to disrespect our parents, but it reminds us that ultimate loyalty lies with God and His word.

In a world that often encourages rebellion, self-centeredness, and independence from family and spiritual discipline, God calls us to something higher. In Ephesians 6:1-3, Paul writes, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’” Obeying this command brings both spiritual and practical rewards.

We must seek to reflect God more than we reflect the world. Our lives should be lived in truth, aligning our hearts with the teachings of Christ. The world may tell us to follow our own path or disregard authority, but God’s Word tells us to honor, submit, and walk in obedience.
