I’m a longtime resident of St. Petersburg, and I’ve been following the recent talks about possibly moving away from Duke Energy. I know a lot of us are concerned about this, and I wanted to share some thoughts and hear what you all think.

⚡ Reliability: Duke Energy’s Track Record

Let’s start with the positives. Duke Energy has been pretty reliable during storms. After recent hurricanes, they restored the majority of outages within just a few days in most areas. They’ve also been working on strengthening the grid, including undergrounding power lines and using smart technology to detect issues faster.

💰 Rising Costs and Rate Hikes

But here’s the kicker: bills are going up. Duke Energy has filed to recover billions in storm costs, which could add to the average monthly bill. While they have reached agreements with consumer groups to make some adjustments, higher bills are still a reality for many families.

🏛️ Local Governments Exploring Alternatives

Some cities are looking into other options. Clearwater is considering creating a city-run utility, and St. Petersburg is studying the feasibility of replacing Duke Energy after their current contract expires in 2026. But Duke Energy estimates it would cost over a billion dollars just to transfer equipment and form a municipal-run utility. That’s a huge investment and comes with a lot of risks.

🤔 The Big Questions

So, what does this mean for us? If we move away from Duke Energy, who’s going to restore our power when the next storm hits? Duke Energy mobilized tens of thousands of workers during past hurricane seasons to ensure power was restored quickly. Can a new local utility match that?

And what about rates? Duke Energy currently has programs in place to help vulnerable customers during extreme weather. Would a new utility be able to offer the same level of support? These are serious considerations, especially for families who rely on stable electricity.

🗣️ Let’s Talk

I’m all for exploring options, but I think we need to be careful. Switching to a local utility might sound good, but it could come with hidden costs and risks. I’d love to hear what you all think. Should we stick with Duke Energy, or is it time to look for something else?

Looking forward to your thoughts,
Sam
