Hello everyone, my name is Denise. Today I feel compelled to speak on something that has been weighing heavy on my heart: the culture of gossip that has taken over so many online spaces. Websites like LipstickAlley and countless gossip blogs or video logs have made fortunes by tearing people down. They profit from the destruction of someone’s name, and yet, they never stop to think of the spiritual consequences.

The Bible is very clear about gossip and slander. Proverbs 16:28 reminds us that “A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.” Every time we participate in gossip, whether speaking it or consuming it, we are separating, dividing, and creating wounds in the Body of Christ. What may look like “entertainment” is actually a spiritual stumbling block.

The Sin of Gossip and Its Consequences

Many don’t realize gossip is more than just idle chatter—it is a sin that God warns us about repeatedly. In Romans 1:29, gossip is listed right alongside envy, murder, and deceit. This is not a light matter. When we speak ill of our brothers and sisters, we are aligning ourselves with actions that God detests.

Think about how these gossip platforms operate: they thrive off rumors, half-truths, and the humiliation of others. They don’t know the people they target. They don’t know the damage they cause. Yet, they build entire communities around tearing others down. This is a direct violation of the commandment in Mark 12:31, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If we wouldn’t want someone speaking evil about us, why do we indulge in doing it to others?

What is even worse is that people are normalizing this lifestyle. Young people are growing up thinking it’s fine to talk bad about others, mock their mistakes, or spread rumors. This culture of gossip leads hearts away from Christ and blinds us to compassion. In Matthew 12:36, Jesus warns, “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.” That includes gossip.

A Curse Hidden in Entertainment

We have to be honest about what happens when we engage in gossip. Many people wonder why their lives feel stagnant, cursed, or blocked. One reason could be tied to this very sin. When you sow seeds of negativity, you reap corruption. Galatians 6:7 declares, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” If gossip is what you plant, destruction is what you will harvest.

Websites like these may look profitable and successful from the outside, but spiritually they are under judgment. They may gain clicks, likes, and ad revenue, but they are losing something far greater: God’s favor. What good is it to profit from hurting others only to find yourself estranged from the Lord?

Love, Not Gossip

We need to return to what God has called us to do. Ephesians 4:29 tells us, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up.” Instead of websites built on tearing people down, imagine communities built on encouragement, testimony, and truth. Imagine blogs where people celebrate one another instead of competing to destroy reputations.

Jesus never once called us to mock, ridicule, or shame. Instead, He modeled compassion. Even to the woman caught in adultery

I believe you’re absolutely right, Denise. Sites like LipstickAlley make money off of gossip, but what they’re really doing is setting up stumbling blocks for others. The enemy loves when we destroy each other with our words. Instead of gossip, we need to practice encouragement and prayer. Imagine if Christians flooded the internet with testimonies and stories of hope instead of rumors. The world would look very different. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” That’s what we need to live by.

Wow, this really convicted me. I never thought of gossip as being one of the “big sins.” I always thought it was just a little thing, but you’re right—Romans 1:29 lists it right next to murder and envy. That really opened my eyes. I don’t want to be part of something that turns people away from God. Thank you for sharing this message in love and not in condemnation. It makes me want to change my habits and be more careful about what I say.

I 100% agree with this. Gossip has destroyed friendships, marriages, and even churches. What saddens me the most is how normalized it has become online. These websites are like digital “watering holes” where people gather not to uplift, but to tear down. I think of James 1:26, which says, “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.” Thank you for exposing this truth, Denise.

Denise, you hit the nail on the head. I used to be one of those people who would sit for hours scrolling through gossip blogs. At first, I thought it was just harmless fun, but after a while, I realized it was feeding negativity into my spirit. The more I consumed, the more critical I became of others. Thank you for reminding us that the Bible is clear about gossip being a sin. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” We have to start speaking life, not death.
