Hey everyone, my nameโs Nathan, and I just joined this forum. I wanted to share something Iโve been going through because I have a feeling Iโm not the only one who deals with this. The other day I sat down, Bible in hand, ready to read and spend some real quiet time with God. I was excited, expecting that peace you get when you open His word. But as soon as I started reading, it was like my brain flipped a switch. Out of nowhere, random thoughts started popping up. Stuff I wasnโt even thinking about five minutes earlier. To-do lists. Old memories. Worries. Even dumb songs. It honestly made me mad because I knew it wasnโt just me being scatterbrainedโit felt like the enemy was trying to keep me from focusing.
It frustrates me because when Iโm scrolling on my phone or watching TV, I donโt have these same distractions. I can binge a whole show and not get interrupted once in my head. But the second I try to dive into scripture, itโs like a battle begins. Thatโs how I know itโs spiritual. The enemy doesnโt care if we spend hours on Netflix, but he does care if weโre feeding our spirit. Because when weโre in the Word, weโre getting stronger, weโre learning Godโs promises, and weโre getting closer to Him. Thatโs dangerous for the enemyโs plan, so of course heโll do whatever he can to pull our attention away.
Iโll be real with you allโsometimes I get discouraged. Iโll start reading, then five minutes later I realize I havenโt even absorbed a single verse because my mind was wandering. Thatโs when the frustration kicks in. Thoughts like, โWhy canโt you focus? Maybe youโre not spiritual enough. Maybe God doesnโt want to talk to you today.โ And that right there is another trick of the enemyโplanting lies to make me give up.
But hereโs the thing Iโm starting to realize: distraction doesnโt mean failure. It just means I need to keep fighting. Reading the Bible isnโt always going to feel easy. Sometimes itโs like pushing through a workout. You donโt always feel strong at first, but the more you stick with it, the stronger you get.
So Iโve been trying some simple things to help me stay focused, and maybe they can help someone else too. First, I try to pray before I read. Just a short prayer like, โLord, clear my mind. Help me focus on You and block out anything that doesnโt belong here.โ It doesnโt have to be fancyโGod knows what we need. Another thing Iโve been doing is reading out loud. It slows me down and helps me actually pay attention to the words instead of letting my eyes just skim over the page. Sometimes Iโll even jot down notes or underline things that stick out. That way Iโm engaging with the scripture instead of just reading it passively.
Another thing thatโs been big for me is reminding myself that God isnโt grading me on how perfectly I read the Bible. He sees my effort. He knows my heart. If I have to read the same verse three times because my mind wandered, Heโs not disappointedโHeโs patient. And honestly, sometimes those repeat readings make me notice things I wouldโve missed.
I also think it helps to remember that Jesus Himself faced temptation and distraction. In the wilderness, the enemy came at Him with lies, trying to pull Him off track. But Jesus fought back with scripture. That shows me two things: one, distraction and attacks are normalโit doesnโt mean Iโm weak or broken. And two, the best way to fight back is to keep pressing into the Word, no matter how many times I have to refocus.
So if youโre dealing with the same thing, just know youโre not alone. Donโt beat yourself up for getting distracted. Instead, recognize it for what it is: a tactic of the enemy. Then push through it. Even if you only get one verse locked into your heart that day, thatโs still a win. God can use that one verse to encourage you, guide you, and even change your life.
At the end of the day, the enemy wants us to quit. But every time we choose to keep going, even when itโs tough, weโre showing him that he doesnโt get the final say. God does. And the more we fight through the distractions, the stronger we get in our faith.
So yeah, thatโs been on my heart lately. If anyone else struggles with this, Iโd love to hear what helps you stay focused. Weโre all in this together, and I know sharing our experiences can help us grow stronger as a community.
Thanks for reading, and God bless.
โ Nathan
