Let me tell you something a lot of people don’t realize: being part of Amazon’s influencer or affiliate program isn’t the glamorous side hustle it looks like. I was an influencer for Amazon, and at first, I thought it was a good deal. You get a chance to make money by reviewing products and sharing them with people. But here’s the catch—Amazon doesn’t really want the truth out there. They want the version of the truth that makes people buy.

When I started, the promise was simple: promote products, get paid. But I quickly learned the unwritten rule—if you say something negative about a product, your video either doesn’t get approved, or worse, your account could be shut down. So in other words, you’re not reviewing the product honestly. You’re advertising it. And when Amazon says “review,” what they mean is: “say good things only.”

That’s where I had a problem. Because I know firsthand, not every product on Amazon is good. In fact, a lot of them are cheap imports from third-party sellers. We’re talking about stuff you could buy off Temu, Alibaba, or straight from unknown vendors in China, just flipped onto Amazon with a pretty description and photos that don’t match what you actually get. But influencers? We were expected to smile, hold up the product, and say how amazing it was.

And here’s the dangerous part that nobody talks about—liability. Imagine this: you promote a product, tell people it’s great because Amazon basically forces your hand, and then somebody gets hurt using it. Or maybe the product was faulty, broke, and caused damages. Who do you think that angry customer might come after in court? Amazon, sure—but also you, the influencer. Because your face and your voice were part of the promotion. That makes you legally vulnerable under consumer protection laws, false advertising statutes, and even Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines that require influencers to be transparent about sponsorships and affiliate relationships.

Amazon knows how to protect itself. Their terms and agreements are airtight. They can always say, “We didn’t force the influencer to say anything; they chose to.” Meanwhile, you’re the one on camera saying, “This product is awesome, go buy it.” If a lawsuit lands, don’t be shocked if you get dragged into it too. That was enough for me to back away because I realized no amount of commission checks was worth risking my own reputation—or worse, a legal fight.

Now, let’s talk about censorship and control. Amazon won’t let influencers post long-form reviews with music or personal branding. You can’t promote your own channel. You can’t even really be authentic. Everything has to stay in their little box. And the minute you step outside that box, your content gets rejected, or your account is on thin ice. I wanted to tell the truth about certain products, but the moment I leaned negative, my video was gone. It was like they were saying: “We’ll pay you, but only if you lie.”

What makes this so dangerous is how it manipulates consumers. People see reviews, they trust influencers, and they buy. But what if those influencers were never allowed to tell the truth in the first place? That’s a scam in itself. You’re not getting authentic feedback—you’re getting staged endorsements. And that’s how buyers get taken advantage of.

Let me also say this: I’ve heard stories from inside Amazon about how the working conditions are bad. And the silence is real. People are scared to talk because they know the power Amazon holds. Same with influencers. Nobody wants to get their account shut down or lose income, so they stay quiet.

But silence only helps Amazon keep control. That’s why I’m speaking up. Not to tell you to never shop on Amazon, but to give you the reality check: if you think those “reviews” you see are always real, think again. If you’re thinking of joining the influencer or affiliate program, ask yourself—do you really want to be in a position where lying for money could come back and bite you legally?

Because the truth is, if Amazon ever gets dragged into a major class-action lawsuit over false advertising, they have the lawyers and resources to protect themselves. Influencers like us? We’d just be collateral damage. And once you’re named in a lawsuit, even if you win, your name is out there forever tied to that mess.

So here’s my advice: read everything Amazon makes you agree to. Study the FTC guidelines on endorsements and advertising. Protect yourself first. If something feels shady, don’t let a paycheck make you ignore it. Because real talk, your reputation and peace of mind are worth way more than affiliate commissions.

At the end of the day, people deserve the truth about what they’re buying. And influencers deserve the freedom to actually give honest reviews. Until Amazon changes how they handle this program, I personally think it’s dangerous—not just for buyers, but for anyone working under them.

That’s My Experience! I needed to get off my chest.
