On September 19th, a heartbreaking tragedy took place in Gulfport, Florida. A young teen named Davon lost his life after reportedly shooting himself on the beach. When I first heard about this, my heart sank. I didn’t know him personally, and maybe many of us here didn’t either, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pause and reflect on the life that was lost. Too often stories like this get pushed to the side, buried under headlines that seem more sensational or profitable for the news cycle. Davon’s story deserved more coverage, more compassion, and more recognition than what was given.

The silence around this event is what hurts the most. A life gone too soon shouldn’t just be a brief mention or a passing whisper. It should be a call for us as a community to step in with love, prayer, and presence. Whether it was a cry for help or a moment of unbearable pain that led to this outcome, the fact remains: a family is grieving tonight. Friends are left wondering “what if,” and an entire city has lost a young life that had so much potential ahead.

What makes this even more painful is how little attention this tragedy received. The Saint Petersburg Police and local news outlets did not cover Davon’s death with the same urgency and detail that they give to other stories. Every life is important to cover—not just select ones. Many people in the community are outraged at this lack of response, and they see it as yet another example of how cases involving people of color are overlooked or minimized. This isn’t the first time something in our neighborhoods has been brushed aside, and it leaves people feeling like the Saint Petersburg Police are lazy when it comes to truly caring for the citizens they’re supposed to protect.

I believe we owe it to Davon and his family to do more than just acknowledge what happened. We should be standing with them in prayer, offering our support, and making sure his name isn’t forgotten. Gulfport is a tight community. It’s the kind of place where people gather at the Rec, where families come together for events, and where we often pride ourselves on looking out for one another. Let’s live up to that. Let’s not allow this tragedy to be swept under the rug.

This is also a moment for us to talk honestly about mental health, especially among our youth. Sometimes the strongest-looking kids are carrying the heaviest burdens. Sometimes the ones who smile the brightest are hurting the most inside. We can’t undo what happened to Davon, but maybe we can learn from it. Maybe we can start checking in more with the young people around us, asking real questions, and giving them space to open up without judgment. If we want to honor Davon, part of that is making sure no other family has to feel this kind of loss.

To the family: please know that you are not alone. Even those of us who didn’t know Davon are keeping you lifted in prayer. We pray for your comfort, your strength, and your healing in the days ahead.

For those who feel moved, I would encourage you to do something symbolic in Davon’s memory. Send a flower. Leave it at the Gulfport Rec. It doesn’t have to be big or fancy—just a simple act of love to show that we see this loss and we care.
