What on earth are people even paying for when they sign up for Reddit Premium? Because I tried it, and let me tell you right now, it’s garbage. Flat-out garbage.
You’re not really getting anything for whatever you’re paying. That’s what bothers me. If I’m going to spend my hard-earned money on a subscription, I expect something of substance in return. I expect that maybe I’ll get better content, or at least some kind of meaningful experience that feels different from the free version.
But no. All they’re doing is dangling this “Premium” label over something that honestly doesn’t deserve it. You get no special content. You don’t unlock anything deeper. The big selling point? Oh, you won’t have ads. That’s it. You’re basically just paying to get rid of advertisements. And I don’t know about you, but to me that feels like a scam dressed up in a suit.
Now, let me get a little deeper, because the ads aren’t even the real issue here. My problem with Reddit has always been about the kind of content you find on there. If I’m going to go to a platform and share my thoughts, or if I’m looking for information of any type, I want to be sure that what I’m seeing has some weight to it. I want to feel like I’m putting something solid into the world, and I want to be surrounded by people doing the same. That’s not what Reddit feels like.
Too many times I’ve posted a question, looking for some honest insight, and instead I get replies from people who are just making things up as they go. Folks don’t put their true thoughts out there anymore. They’re just tossing things up for the clicks, the karma, the quick laugh. And sure, sometimes it’s entertaining, but if I’m going to invest my time and my voice in a community, I want it to mean something. I want to sit down, share, and connect with people who care about what’s real. That’s not what I see happening on Reddit these days.
And here’s what really makes me shake my head. The so-called Premium version doesn’t fix any of that. It doesn’t give you more accurate information. It doesn’t give you a stronger community. It doesn’t even connect you to people who are putting in effort. All it does is take away the ads. That’s it. And I could live with ads, honestly, if it meant I was getting a real experience. But instead they act like they’re offering something elite, something exclusive, when in reality the free content is better. I’m not exaggerating. The free Reddit experience actually feels more worth my time than the paid one, which is just backwards if you think about it.
It frustrates me because they could be doing so much more. They could use Premium to highlight thoughtful discussions, or to create spaces where people actually take conversations seriously. They could create a way to filter out the nonsense and get to the good stuff. But no, that’s not where they’ve chosen to go. Instead, they’re basically telling us, “Pay us a monthly fee, and we’ll let you have the same Reddit you’ve always had — just without ads.” That’s it. And you know what? That doesn’t sit right with me.
I feel ripped off, and I don’t like feeling that way. When you start charging people money, there should be value. You can’t just lean on the word “Premium” and hope people don’t notice that you haven’t actually given them anything. And worse, the content itself isn’t even genuine. Too much of what’s on Reddit these days is created for click value — people chasing numbers instead of sharing something real. And when a platform starts feeding that machine, it loses its soul.
Reddit Premium is not worth it. Not now, not the way it is. If they want to earn people’s money, they’ve got to give something more than what they’re giving. Until then, I’ll stick to the free side, ads and all, because at least I won’t feel like I’m paying for nothing. And honestly? That’s the truth of it.
