If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all His commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God.” – Deuteronomy 28:1–2 (NIV)

Devotional

There’s something powerful about the promises in Deuteronomy 28. God lays it out in plain words: when we obey Him, blessings follow. These blessings are not just random good things that fall from the sky; they are tied directly to our willingness to trust and walk in His Word.

I remember a story about a young woman named Angela. She was at a crossroads in her life. She had been offered a high-paying job in another city, but deep down she felt uneasy. Taking the job would mean compromising on her values—working long hours in an environment where lying and cutting corners was not just encouraged, but expected.

Angela spent weeks praying, asking God what to do. One morning, during her devotional time, she came across Deuteronomy 28:1–2. The words struck her heart: “If you fully obey the Lord your God…” She realized God was telling her to put obedience above everything else—even above financial security.

So, Angela turned down the offer. Friends and family thought she was crazy. But just a few weeks later, another job opportunity came her way. This one allowed her to use her gifts, work with integrity, and still provide for her family. Looking back, she could see that by choosing obedience over compromise, she unlocked blessings that only God could have arranged.

This is the heart of what Deuteronomy 28 is teaching us. Obedience is not just about following rules—it’s about trust. It’s saying, “God, I believe You know what’s best for me.” When we walk in His commands, it positions us under the flow of His blessings. That doesn’t mean life will be free of trials, but it does mean we will experience His favor, protection, and provision in ways that disobedience will never give us.

Think of it like an umbrella. When it’s pouring rain outside, the umbrella keeps you covered. But the moment you step out from under it, you’re exposed to the storm. God’s Word is our umbrella. When we obey Him, we remain under His covering, and blessings naturally follow. When we choose our own way, we step out into the storm on our own.

Today, Deuteronomy 28 reminds us of two truths:

  1. God’s blessings are tied to obedience.
  2. Obedience comes from faith—trusting that His way is always better.

Where in your life do you need to step back under God’s covering? Maybe it’s in your relationships, your finances, or even in your daily choices of how you spend your time. Whatever it is, remember that obedience isn’t always easy, but it always leads to blessings that last.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me today that obedience is the pathway to blessing. Help me to trust You enough to follow Your Word, even when it seems difficult or unpopular. Teach me to surrender my will and walk in faith, knowing that Your promises are true and unshakable. Like Angela, help me to choose obedience over compromise, so that I may remain under the covering of Your protection and favor. Lord, I ask that You align my heart with Your commands, and let my life be a testimony of what it means to walk in Your blessings. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
