Hey everyone, my name’s Diane, and I wanted to get some advice about something I’ve been struggling with. I have a mixture of natural and relaxed hair, and lately, it’s been feeling really dry and brittle. I’ve been thinking about washing it twice a week to help with moisture, but I’m not sure if that’s a good idea or if it’ll make things worse.

For anyone who’s dealt with mixed textures before — what do you recommend? Should I wash more often, less often, or maybe use certain products between washes? I’d really love some professional input on how to keep my hair healthy without drying it out even more.

Hi Diane, that’s a really smart question — and you’re not alone in dealing with mixed-texture hair that’s both natural and relaxed. The dryness you’re describing often comes from your hair’s cuticle layers reacting differently. The relaxed portions are more porous, meaning they lose moisture faster, while the natural parts retain more strength but can feel rougher.

Washing twice a week can be fine as long as you’re using the right products. The key is not the frequency — it’s how you wash and what you use. If you’re using a harsh shampoo each time, you’ll strip your hair of natural oils and make it drier. Instead, try this routine:

  • Use a sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo once a week.
  • On the second wash, use just a co-wash (a conditioner-based cleanser) to refresh your scalp and ends without over-drying.
  • Follow every wash with a deep conditioner or a protein-moisture balance treatment.
  • Between washes, apply a light leave-in conditioner or hair oil (like jojoba or argan) to your ends to seal in hydration.

And if you use heat styling tools, always protect your hair with a thermal protectant — especially the relaxed parts, which are more vulnerable.

So yes, you can wash twice a week, but balance it with gentle, moisture-focused care. Your goal should be keeping your strands hydrated and protected from breakage — not just clean.

Hey Diane! 👋 I’ve got the same situation — my hair is half natural and half relaxed too, so I totally get where you’re coming from. I used to wash mine twice a week because it felt dry, but I learned that it’s not just about how often you wash, it’s about how you moisturize afterward.

When I was washing too often with regular shampoo, my hair got even drier. Now I do one full wash with a moisturizing shampoo and one co-wash midweek using conditioner only. That way my scalp stays fresh, but I’m not stripping all the oils out.

After that, I always use a leave-in conditioner and a sealing oil like olive or Jamaican black castor oil — especially on the relaxed ends. I also sleep with a satin bonnet every night because cotton pillowcases dry my hair out fast. It’s really helped keep my hair soft and manageable.

So yes, twice a week can work, but only if you’re adding moisture back in every single time. Hope that helps, girl! 💕
