Let me get this straight, because apparently, Instacart can’t. They’re charging me $3.99 for pickup — meaning, I go to the store, park my car, get out, grab my groceries, and do half the work myself — but if I want delivery, where someone else drives through traffic, burns gas, and drops it right at my door, it’s only $2.49. Make that make sense.

I’m not even mad — I’m confused. How does it cost more to let me do the legwork? Like, I’m the one showing up, not using your driver, not waiting for delivery, not taking up anyone’s time. But you’re telling me that my effort is somehow more expensive than convenience? This is the kind of upside-down logic that makes people lose faith in these so-called “smart” delivery apps.

Instacart’s entire model is supposed to be about saving time, right? Giving people flexibility? But now it feels like they’re punishing you for not wanting to deal with drivers or delivery windows. You’d think they’d give a small discount for pickup since it requires less from them — no driver, no gas, no route planning. Instead, they’ve managed to make picking up your own order sound like a premium service.

Maybe Annette over at pricing didn’t double-check her calculator, because I can’t see how this makes sense. Even if it’s about “operational costs” or “store handling fees,” it doesn’t explain why delivery, which uses more resources, is cheaper. Someone has to pick the order, pack it, and then drive it over. Pickup just skips the driving part. So unless there’s a hidden delivery fairy covering those costs, I don’t get it.

And don’t come at me with that “service fee” fine print either. I already know Instacart loves hiding behind those. You’ll go to checkout thinking you’re paying one thing, and then suddenly the total looks like you accidentally sponsored a startup. Between taxes, fees, and that mysterious “heavy item” charge, the price jumps faster than you can blink. But charging more for pickup? That’s just insulting.

Let’s call it what it is: a money grab. They know people are used to convenience, and now they’re betting on confusion. They figure you won’t notice the numbers, that you’ll just click through checkout and move on. But some of us are paying attention, and we’re not letting this slide.

At the end of the day, it’s not even about the couple of dollars — it’s about principle. If you’re going to make customers choose between pickup and delivery, at least price it logically. Don’t pretend you’re giving a discount when the whole system is backward.

Instacart needs to stop overcomplicating something as simple as buying groceries. We’re not asking for miracles — just fair pricing and common sense. Because right now, it looks like Instacart has both of those stuck in the wrong cart.
