When God told me that my intentions mean more to Him than what I’ve done or will do, it stopped me right in my tracks. Because I realized — He’s not looking at my track record, He’s looking at my heart posture. And if that doesn’t change the way you live, I don’t know what will.

Sometimes, we think God is grading us like a teacher checking off boxes to see if we said all the right words, prayed long enough, or avoided every single mistake. But when He spoke to me, He said something that changed everything: “Your intentions mean more to Me than what you’ve done or what you will do.”
That’s when 1 Samuel 16:7 hit me differently. It says, “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” And that’s exactly what He was saying to me. God doesn’t get impressed by our image He’s moved by our intention. He’s not looking for perfection; He’s looking for truth inside of us.
We live in a world where people are obsessed with the outward appearance — who’s posting what, who looks more “holy,” who sounds more “spiritual.” But God? He’s not scrolling through our highlight reels. He’s searching for something much deeper: Are you trying? Are you genuine? Do you love Me even when you fall short?
And that’s what He expects from us as people. God knows every failure before it happens. He’s not shocked when we stumble. What moves Him is when our heart still says, “Lord, I’m trying. I want to please You. I want to do better.” That intention, that desire, is where the Spirit begins to teach, heal, and shape us.
See, your heart posture determines your direction. You might not be perfect, but if your heart is pointed toward God, you’re on the right path. That’s why it’s so important not to give up just because you messed up. The moment you start thinking, “I failed; God’s done with me,” you’re believing a lie. God doesn’t cancel people He corrects them in love.
When God looks at us, He’s looking for three things:
- Honesty — Be real with Him. Tell Him when you’re struggling.
- Humility — Admit that you don’t have it all together.
- Hope — Believe that even in your mess, He can still use you.
The truth is, our intentions shape our relationship with God far more than our actions ever could. Because sometimes, you’ll do everything right but still miss the point if your heart isn’t in it. And other times, you’ll mess up completely, yet God will still draw near because He sees your intention was to do right.
So what does God expect from us as people?
He expects us to live with a pure heart one that loves, forgives, learns, and keeps showing up. He doesn’t want actors; He wants seekers. People who are willing to grow, fall, and get back up again with the same desire to walk closer to Him.
The world may judge you for your mistakes, but God measures your motives. People might only see your actions, but God sees why you did it. That’s why grace is so beautiful it’s not a pass to keep failing, it’s a reminder that God already saw your heart when you tried.
So today, stop worrying about being perfect. Stop trying to prove yourself to everyone. Just make sure your intentions are pure, your heart is open, and your focus stays on Him. Because the moment you do that, you’ll realize you’ve already given God what He wanted most. 💛
