Xbox just proved why going digital is the worst idea ever. I’m sorry, but this is exactly why I will never fully trust an all-digital future. Every time these gaming companies start talking about how digital is “the future,” they always leave out the part where they control everything. You don’t own the game. You own permission to access it…until they decide otherwise. Watching everything that’s happening with Xbox lately just proves the point.

When you buy a physical game, you can put it on your shelf, lend it to a friend, sell it years later, or play it even if a store disappears. There’s something comforting about actually owning what you paid for.
With digital, you’re depending on servers, licensing agreements, internet connections, company policies, and accounts staying in good standing. If something changes behind the scenes, you’re the one left hoping everything still works.
People used to laugh at gamers who wanted physical discs. Now those same people are starting to understand why so many of us refused to give them up.
We’re paying the same $70 or even more for a digital download that we can’t resell, can’t trade, can’t collect, and in some situations can even lose access to. How does that make sense?
Companies keep calling it convenience, but convenience shouldn’t come at the cost of ownership. I love gaming. I’ve been playing for years. But I also remember when buying a game actually meant it belonged to you. You could pull it out ten years later, pop it into your console, and play. There wasn’t a question about whether your license still existed or whether some online service was still running.
Now everything feels temporary. What’s even more frustrating is that gamers warned this would happen years ago. People said once companies pushed everyone toward digital, consumers would lose more control. Instead of listening, people were told they were stuck in the past.
Well…look where we are now. This isn’t just about Xbox. This is about the entire gaming industry slowly moving toward a model where companies have all the control and customers have less and less. I still buy physical games whenever I can, and situations like this remind me why.
Call me old-fashioned if you want, but I like owning the things I spend my hard-earned money on. I don’t want to rent my game library without realizing it. Digital isn’t all bad. It’s convenient for quick downloads, indie games, and sales. But it should be an optionโnot the only option.
The day physical media completely disappears is the day gamers give up one of the biggest rights they’ve always had: true ownership. Xbox may think digital is the future, but if this is what the future looks like, I think a lot of gamers are going to start missing those discs sitting on the shelf.
