In todayโs fast-paced world, itโs easy to treat God like an emergency contactโsomeone we reach out to only in crisis or when we need something. But the truth is, if you want to live a life that is truly blessed and hear from God clearly, you must intentionally make room for Him to dwell. He must not be an afterthought or a backup plan; He must be your first priority. God isnโt interested in a part-time relationshipโHe desires your full heart. Scripture is clear: โBut seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to youโ (Matthew 6:33, ESV). This verse does not say seek God when youโre in trouble, when itโs convenient, or when youโve run out of options. It says to seek Him first. Before the bills, before the job, before the relationshipโGod comes first.
Making room for God begins in the heart. It means clearing out distractions, idols, and anything that takes precedence over Him. Revelation 3:20 reminds us of Godโs desire to dwell with us: โBehold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.โ God is always ready to enter in, but He will not force His way. You must open the door. That takes intention. That takes priority. You canโt expect to hear from God clearly if Heโs constantly being drowned out by worldly noise. The blessings that come with a relationship with God are not found in a part-time connection. Psalm 91:1 says, โHe who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.โ Dwells implies permanenceโnot a visit, but a lifestyle. When God becomes your dwelling place, His presence becomes your shield, your guide, and your peace.
Many people treat God like a vending machineโinsert a prayer and expect a blessing. But true faith is shown when you worship God before the breakthrough, when you thank Him in the valley, and when you obey Him even when it costs you something. This shows God that He is not just a means to an end, but the center of your life. James 4:8 declares, โDraw near to God, and He will draw near to you.โ The closeness you experience with God depends on the space you give Him. Do you only call on Him in a crisis, or do you wake up and say, โLord, what would You have me do today?โ Is your schedule too full to pray, or do you make time because you understand He is the source of your strength?
If you want to hear Godโs voice, feel His presence, and walk in His blessing, then He must be necessary in your lifeโnot optional. He must be your foundation, not your backup plan. When you make room for Him daily, your life will transform, because God never shows up empty-handed. Let today be the day you stop squeezing God into the margins. Instead, give Him the centerโyour heart, your time, your devotion. Heโs waiting. Will you make room for Him?
