In a world where political speeches are filled with promises of justice and protection, it is shameful that we still witness the mistreatment and attacks on immigrants—people who are legally in this country, living by the law, and contributing to the community. These are not stories from distant history books; they are today’s headlines. And the worst part? Many of the men in office, along with influential voices in this world, stand by and do nothing. Their silence and inaction reveal a truth we must confront: cowardice has infected leadership.
The Bible is not silent about this matter. In Leviticus 19:33, God’s command is clear: “When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them.” This is not a suggestion; it is a divine mandate. It doesn’t add qualifiers like “only if they speak your language” or “only if they look like you.” God commands His people to treat the foreigner with dignity and compassion. Ignoring this principle is not only a failure of morality—it is disobedience to God Himself.
The attacks on legal immigrants are not just physical; they are social, economic, and political. People are harassed, denied opportunities, and treated as if they don’t belong, despite having every legal right to be here. These individuals have often gone through years of paperwork, background checks, and government vetting to secure their status. They pay taxes, raise families, and enrich the culture around them. And what do our leaders do? Too often, nothing. They give speeches during election season about “unity” and “justice” but refuse to challenge the mobs of hate when it’s politically inconvenient. True leadership requires courage, and courage means standing up for what is right even when it costs you. But this issue goes beyond politicians. Ordinary citizens also bear responsibility. Social media has turned into a weapon, where lies about immigrants are spread without a second thought. Communities turn their backs on their neighbors instead of standing in solidarity. We have people who go to church on Sunday, nodding along as Scripture is read, then walk out into the street and treat foreigners as enemies. This hypocrisy is sickening and directly contradicts the heart of God.
God’s instructions in Leviticus were not arbitrary. The Israelites were once foreigners in Egypt, and God wanted them to remember what it was like to be the outsider, vulnerable to abuse. Today, that same reminder applies to us. Unless you are a Native American, your family at some point came from another land. The blood that runs through our veins is mixed with the journeys of immigrants. How dare we forget that when we look into the eyes of someone who has come here legally?
To attack them is to attack the very principles this nation claims to stand for—liberty, justice, and equality under the law. To remain silent while they are attacked is to become complicit in the evil. The cowardice of leaders who choose comfort over courage will be judged—not only by history but by God Himself.
We must remember: God’s command to “not mistreat the foreigner” is not a soft sentiment—it is a line drawn in the sand. When we cross it, we step into disobedience, cruelty, and injustice. And if we allow leaders to stand idle while immigrants are harmed, we endorse their cowardice.
It’s time for people of conscience to speak out, to defend those who have every right to live here in peace, and to demand that our leaders grow a spine. The world doesn’t need more political speeches—it needs moral action.
