Hey y’all,

Close-up of a woman wearing a stylish white denim skirt with frayed edges, outdoors with palm trees in the background.

So, I have a question that’s been on my mind. Does anyone really still follow the “no white after Labor Day” rule anymore? I live in Florida, where it’s pretty much summer all year round, and I happen to own this gorgeous white skirt that I love to pieces. September rolls in and suddenly I’m wondering, am I committing some kind of fashion crime by wearing it?

I know this whole rule goes way back to old-school fashion etiquette, something about summer wardrobes versus fall wardrobes, but down here in Florida the weather doesn’t exactly play by those rules. It’s still blazing hot in September (and let’s be real, October too), so putting my whites away feels silly.

Do you guys still follow that rule where you live, or is it more of an outdated tradition at this point? Personally, I feel like fashion has become a lot more flexible, and people wear what makes them comfortable no matter the month. But I’d love to hear if anyone here still sticks to that old guideline—or if you think it’s perfectly fine to rock a white skirt year-round.

Claire, I actually still pay attention to that rule, but it’s more out of habit than necessity. Growing up, my mom and grandmother were strict about putting away white after Labor Day. For them, it symbolized the end of summer and the start of a more muted, fall-appropriate wardrobe. While I don’t think people will side-eye you for wearing white in Florida (especially with the heat), I personally enjoy following the seasonal changes in fashion. It gives me an excuse to switch up my closet and embrace different styles throughout the year. But at the end of the day, if you love that skirt, wear it!

Hey Claire, I say go for it! The whole “no white after Labor Day” thing is super outdated. It was more of an old societal rule from back when people switched wardrobes between summer and fall. But fashion today is about comfort, climate, and personal style. Since you’re in Florida, it makes even less sense to pack away your whites—it’s hot and sunny most of the year! A white skirt in September (or even December) is totally fine. Pair it with something seasonal like a denim jacket or a light cardigan if you want, but honestly, wear it proudly. Fashion rules are meant to be broken. However, make sure that the skirt is not too short. Remember only you and GOD should know what you look like under your clothes until you get married. Then its you GOD and your husband.
