So let me just go ahead and rant because this has me heated. I was scrolling through Facebook Marketplace the other day, just casually looking at rentals, and I came across a post from a girl named Mika. She’s advertising this tiny house — and when I say tiny, I mean tiny. One bedroom, one bathroom, no real space to do anything but eat, sleep, and maybe breathe if you stand in the right spot. The kicker? She’s asking for $1,500 a month.
Now I don’t know what kind of alternate universe we’re living in, but there’s no way this should be considered normal. Fifteen hundred dollars for a shoebox on wheels? You could literally rent a two-bedroom apartment in the same area for that price. Some people even pay less for more space. The whole thing makes me feel like folks are just throwing darts at a board when they come up with these rental prices, hoping someone desperate enough will bite.
And here’s the thing — I’m not knocking Mika personally. People are going to try and get what they can, especially in this market. But I am knocking this housing madness that makes people think it’s okay to list a glorified shed for the same rent you’d pay in a full apartment. Tiny houses used to be marketed as an affordable lifestyle. Remember that? You gave up square footage because you were saving big money. But what’s the point now? Where’s the savings? Paying $1,500 to live in a box isn’t financial freedom, it’s financial slavery with cute Instagram photos.
Let’s also be real about what’s happening here: Facebook Marketplace is crawling with landlords, wannabe landlords, and people flipping spaces just to make a quick buck. They hype it up as “minimalist living,” “eco-friendly,” or “a cozy alternative.” That sales pitch sounds nice until you realize you’re paying premium rent for something that doesn’t even have the square footage of a regular apartment’s living room.
And don’t get me started on the ripple effect. Listings like Mika’s make other landlords say, “Well if she can ask $1,500 for that, maybe I can bump my rent up too.” Before you know it, everyone is charging ridiculous amounts, and the rest of us are left wondering how the heck we’re supposed to afford a place to live. It’s like housing has become some sort of Hunger Games competition, and the prize is a roof over your head.
Honestly, I don’t care how “cute” a tiny house looks on Facebook pictures, it will never make sense to me that you should pay luxury rent for less than half the space. If I’m shelling out $1,500, I expect at least two bedrooms, some storage space, and enough room so I’m not bumping into my own furniture every five seconds.
People are nuts, and Facebook Marketplace is just adding fuel to the fire. $1,500 for a tiny house? Absolutely not.
