So here’s the thing — I’m supposed to start my cycle soon, and out of nowhere, one of my nipples got really sore. Not both, just one. I was like, “Okay, what’s going on here?” because I’ve had regular breast tenderness before my period, but never just one side acting up.
After paying attention to it for a few days, I realized it started around the same time my PMS symptoms kicked in — the bloating, the mood changes, the whole deal. So I decided to look into whether this was something to worry about or not. Turns out, it’s actually pretty common.
Before our periods, our hormones — mainly estrogen and progesterone — start shifting, and that can make breast tissue more sensitive or swollen. Sometimes that sensitivity shows up unevenly because our breasts aren’t exactly identical. One side can react more than the other, so it’s possible to have soreness just on one nipple or one side.
I also learned a few other things that could make one nipple sore:
- Pressure or rubbing from a tight bra or sleeping on one side too much.
- Exercise strain or lifting something heavy that pulls on chest muscles.
- Or even a small fluid-filled cyst that swells up from hormone changes.
So if this happens to you, don’t panic right away. It might just be your body reacting to the hormonal roller coaster before your cycle. What usually helps me is wearing a soft bra, avoiding caffeine and salty foods, and using a warm compress when the pain is annoying.
But if the soreness keeps going after your period, or you notice discharge, redness, swelling, a lump, or any major changes in how your nipple looks, that’s when it’s time to check in with your doctor.
I just wanted to put this out there because so many of us deal with weird body stuff in silence, and sometimes all it takes is hearing that someone else went through the same thing. Your body goes through a lot during your cycle — and sometimes, even when it feels off, it’s just hormones doing their thing.
If anyone else experiences this kind of one-sided soreness, feel free to share what helped you. Sometimes the best advice comes from other women going through the same thing.
