Let me tell yโall something, I just got back from the Aldi on 2900 34th Street South, and Iโm still shaking my head. I went in there to grab just a few simple items, nothing major, and what do I get in return? A checkout worker who treated me like I was some kind of inconvenience for even being there. Now, I donโt care how long someoneโs shift is or how tired they are if you choose to work in customer service, you should know that how you treat people matters. Period.
I used the self-checkout line because, honestly, I prefer it. I like moving at my own pace and not feeling rushed. But even from the self-checkout area, the woman at the register next to me was just loud, rude, and dismissive. It wasnโt what she said…. it was how she said it. The tone, the look, the attitude like I didnโt deserve basic respect. Iโm a paying customer, and the least you can do is treat me like one.
Customer service has completely fallen apart these days. Itโs like people donโt take pride in what they do anymore. It used to be that when you went into a store, someone greeted you with a smile, asked if you needed help, and genuinely cared whether you had a good shopping experience. Now, you walk in, and they act like theyโre being forced to be there. If you hate your job so much that you have to take it out on customers, then maybe thatโs not the right job for you.
And hereโs the sad truth this kind of behavior is why people are choosing AI and self-checkout over dealing with humans. Think about it: AI doesnโt roll its eyes, it doesnโt sigh, it doesnโt act like youโre wasting its time. It just does the job. And honestly, if human workers want to keep their jobs, they better start realizing that being rude and careless is not how you stay valuable in a customer-driven world.
I donโt say this to be harsh, but we need to start holding employees accountable for their behavior. When youโre hired to work with the public, youโre not just getting paid to scan groceries or ring up totals youโre getting paid to represent the company. That means your tone, your attitude, your professionalism โ all of it reflects on the store. If you treat customers badly, guess what? You make the entire store look bad.
I was going to talk to a manager about it, but honestly, I didnโt even have the time that day. Still, it bothered me enough that Iโm writing this because I think more people need to speak up. Too often, customers just let it slide, and rude employees continue acting like that because no one says anything. Well, not me. Iโm not going to keep spending money in a place that canโt show basic decency.
This experience also made me think about something deeper the hiring process itself. Weโve got people working jobs they donโt even like, just clocking in for a paycheck. But thatโs a problem because if you hate your job, you canโt give good service. We need to start hiring people who actually want to do the work. Hire people who care. Train them right. Teach them that customer service isnโt just about transactions itโs about respect.
At the end of the day, we all just want to be treated with dignity. It doesnโt matter if Iโm buying a single loaf of bread or a full cart of groceries I deserve to be treated like a valued customer, not an annoyance. Thatโs the difference between a store that thrives and one that loses loyal shoppers.
So no, I wonโt tolerate rude service, and I wonโt keep spending money where people act like customers are beneath them. Respect goes both ways, and Iโll take my business to places that understand that. Aldi, do better because people like me are paying attention.

I agree 100%. If AI ever replaces these jobs, I wonโt feel bad at least it wont roll its eyes at me while Iโm spending my money.
Right?! Iโve had that same energy from workers lately too. Itโs almost like they forget whoโs paying their paycheck.
Exactly! Itโs not that hard to be kind. A simple hi or thank you goes a long way. Some of these employees act like customers are bothering them just for showing up.
I went to that 34th Street Aldi a few weeks ago and had a similar experience. The cashier didnโt even make eye contact, just tossed my receipt like she was annoyed I was there. Itโs embarrassing for a company that big to have employees acting like that. Youโre absolutely right if you hate your job, find something else to do. Iโm glad someone finally said it out loud.
Rachel. This is exactly why so many people are using self-checkout and AI. At least technology doesnโt have an attitude. The sad part is, it used to be that Aldi had some of the nicest employees. Lately though, it feels like nobody cares anymore. Theyโre lucky people even still shop there with customer service going downhill like this.
Girl, I totally feel you on this. I stopped going to that same Aldi a while back for the exact same reason. The workers act like itโs such a chore just to say hello or even acknowledge you. Iโve worked in customer service before, and trust me, I know itโs not easy โ but thatโs no excuse to be rude to people spending their hard-earned money. You handled it better than I would have!
