When scoring “Ideas” for Pearson, using the Wang Yani passage is one of the easiest ways to understand what a clear controlling idea looks like.
A strong response usually starts with something like: “Art changed Wang Yani’s life by helping her become famous at a young age.” That right there is a clear idea. It answers the question and tells the reader exactly what the student plans to explain.
Now let’s break it down. The “idea” is not just naming art—it’s explaining how art impacted her life. A student should then support that idea with details, like how she started painting as a child, gained recognition, and became known for her talent. These details strengthen the idea.
A weaker response might just say: “Wang Yani liked art.” That’s too simple and doesn’t explain anything meaningful. There’s no depth or development.
So when scoring Ideas, ask yourself:
- Is there a clear main point?
- Does the student explain how or why?
- Are there supporting details from the passage?
If those are present, the response is strong in Ideas—even if the grammar isn’t perfect.
