When scoring โ€œIdeasโ€ for Pearson, using the Wang Yani passage is one of the easiest ways to understand what a clear controlling idea looks like.

A strong response usually starts with something like: โ€œArt changed Wang Yaniโ€™s life by helping her become famous at a young age.โ€ That right there is a clear idea. It answers the question and tells the reader exactly what the student plans to explain.

Now letโ€™s break it down. The โ€œideaโ€ is not just naming artโ€”itโ€™s explaining how art impacted her life. A student should then support that idea with details, like how she started painting as a child, gained recognition, and became known for her talent. These details strengthen the idea.

A weaker response might just say: โ€œWang Yani liked art.โ€ Thatโ€™s too simple and doesnโ€™t explain anything meaningful. Thereโ€™s no depth or development.

So when scoring Ideas, ask yourself:

  • Is there a clear main point?
  • Does the student explain how or why?
  • Are there supporting details from the passage?

If those are present, the response is strong in Ideasโ€”even if the grammar isnโ€™t perfect.
