No—the length of a response does NOT determine whether it gets a 0. That’s a really important point.

A response is scored a 0 when it:

  • Is off-topic
  • Is completely incorrect or irrelevant
  • Is too minimal to show any understanding (like just a few unrelated words)

👉 But if a student writes even a short response that:

  • Addresses the prompt
  • Shows some understanding
  • Includes any relevant idea or detail

…it can absolutely earn a 1 or even a 2, depending on quality—not length.

Example of a Strong Response (What You Can Say):

Honestly, length should not be the deciding factor when scoring a response. A short answer can still clearly address the prompt and show understanding of the text, which means it deserves a score higher than zero. A zero should only be given when the response is completely off-topic, incorrect, or too limited to demonstrate any real comprehension.

I’ve seen responses that were not full paragraphs but still had a clear idea and referenced the passage in a meaningful way. In those cases, it makes sense for them to receive a score like a 1 or 2 because they are still showing effort and understanding.

The confusion comes in when expectations around structure are emphasized, but scoring is supposed to focus more on ideas and evidence. As long as the student answers the question and provides some support from the text, the response should be scored based on quality—not just length.

There definitely needs to be more clarity around this so scorers can feel confident and consistent.

PROMPT (EXAMPLE)

Explain how art changed Wang Yani’s life using details from the passage.

SHORT STUDENT RESPONSE (NOT A FULL PARAGRAPH)

Art changed Wang Yani life because she became famous and got to travel. The passage says people around the world saw her paintings.

WHY THIS IS NOT A 0

Even though it’s short:

  • ✔️ Addresses the prompt (art changed her life)
  • ✔️ Gives a relevant idea (fame, travel)
  • ✔️ Uses text evidence (people around the world saw her paintings)

👉 This shows understanding

LIKELY SCORE:

  • Ideas: 2 (clear but not developed)
  • Conventions: 2 (minor grammar error: “Wang Yani life”)

🚨 COMPARE TO A TRUE 0:

“Wang Yani liked painting monkeys and animals.”

  • Doesn’t explain how art changed her life
  • No real answer to the prompt

👉 That would be a 0

💡 KEY TAKEAWAY

Length ≠ score

  • Short + relevant = 1 or 2
  • Short + irrelevant = 0

⚠️ KEY RULE BEFORE WE START

A response can be LONG and still get a 0 if it:

  • ❌ Does NOT answer the prompt
  • ❌ Is completely off-topic
  • ❌ Shows no understanding of the task

EXAMPLE 1 – LONG BUT COMPLETELY OFF-TOPIC (0)

PROMPT:

Explain how art changed Wang Yani’s life.

STUDENT RESPONSE:

Art is something that many people enjoy doing in their free time. Some people draw, while others like to paint or create sculptures. Art can be relaxing and help people express their feelings. There are many different types of art around the world, and each culture has its own style.

People who are artists sometimes become famous, but not everyone does. Some people just enjoy art as a hobby. Art is also taught in schools so students can learn creativity. It is important for people to have hobbies like art because it helps them stay busy and creative.

WHY THIS IS A 0:

  • Never mentions Wang Yani
  • Never explains how art changed HER life
  • Just talks about art in general

👉 Completely off-task = 0

EXAMPLE 2 – LONG SUMMARY ONLY (0)

STUDENT RESPONSE:

Wang Yani started painting when she was very young. She liked to paint monkeys and animals. People began to notice her artwork and she became known for her paintings. She traveled to different places and showed her work to many people. She kept painting and improving over time.

WHY THIS IS A 0:

  • ONLY retells the story
  • ❌ No explanation of how art changed her life
  • ❌ No controlling idea

👉 Pure summary = 0

EXAMPLE 3 – MISUNDERSTANDS THE PROMPT (0)

STUDENT RESPONSE:

Wang Yani’s life was difficult because she had to work very hard at painting. She struggled and had a hard time becoming an artist. Art made her life harder because she had to keep practicing all the time.

WHY THIS IS A 0:

  • ❌ Incorrect interpretation
  • Claims art made her life worse (not supported)
  • ❌ No accurate understanding of passage

👉 Wrong understanding = 0

💡 FINAL SCORER TIP (VERY IMPORTANT):

When deciding between 0 vs 1, ask:

👉 “Did they EVEN attempt to answer the prompt correctly?”

  • Yes (even weak) → 1
  • No / Wrong / Off-topic → 0
