I’ve noticed that Google still seems to be censoring or filtering reviews, and I think it’s becoming a serious problem.
The internet is supposed to be a place where people can openly share their experiences, both good and bad. Reviews exist for a reason: to help consumers make informed decisions. If negative reviews are being hidden while only positive reviews are shown, then the entire purpose of a review system starts to fall apart.
The reason I feel strongly about this is because of something that happened to my father. He purchased a product from an alternative health food store that nearly cost him his life. Before making the purchase, he checked the Google reviews and saw mostly glowing 5-star ratings. Based on what he saw, he felt confident that the business was trustworthy.
Later, we discovered that many people on Reddit and other websites were reporting completely different experiences. There were complaints, warnings, and negative reviews that painted a much different picture of the company. If those concerns had been easier to find from the start, my father might have thought twice before buying the product. He may have consulted with a medical doctor first instead of relying on what appeared to be overwhelmingly positive feedback online.
That’s why I believe platforms like Google have a responsibility to make sure review systems remain balanced and transparent. I’m not saying every review should be accepted without question. Spam, harassment, and profanity should absolutely be moderated. However, legitimate reviews from real customers—whether positive or negative—should be allowed to remain visible.
When only glowing reviews are displayed, consumers can end up making decisions based on incomplete information. That can be dangerous, especially when it involves health products, medical claims, or services that affect people’s well-being.
I understand that no information source is perfect and that people should always do their own research. However, when Google positions itself as one of the world’s largest sources of information, I believe it has some responsibility to present a fair and accurate picture.
Let the reviews speak for themselves. Let consumers decide what to believe. The role of a review platform should be to provide information, not decide which opinions are allowed to be seen.
What do you think? Have you ever discovered that a business had negative reviews elsewhere that weren’t easy to find on Google?

I have started using multiple sources before making decisions because Google’s information alone isn’t enough anymore.
I’ve noticed this too. Sometimes I’ll see a business with almost perfect ratings on Google, but when I search elsewhere, I find a lot of complaints. That’s why I never rely on just one source before making a purchase.
I agree with you. If a review comes from a real customer and doesn’t violate any rules, it should stay visible. People depend on reviews to make important decisions, especially when it comes to products that affect their health and safety.
