The family of Daniel Erving, who was known to loved ones as “Mike,” says they are thankful that arrests have finally been made, but they believe there is still a long road ahead before true justice is served.
During a Tuesday press conference, Mike’s mother, Tameka Erving, stood alongside civil rights attorney Ben Crump to speak publicly about the case. She became emotional as she talked about the son she lost and the pain her family continues to live with every day.
Authorities have announced the arrests of a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old in connection with Mike’s death. While those arrests mark an important step in the investigation, Tameka Erving said her family has only received “partial justice.”
She shared heartfelt words about her son:
“Daniel Erving, my baby boy. He liked to go by Mike, so this is a fight for Mike. Mike was an outstanding young man. He was never into any trouble. He was like my guardian angel.”
Her comments remind everyone that this case is about more than court documents and arrests. It is about a mother grieving the loss of her son and wanting the people responsible to be held accountable.
Ben Crump, who has represented many families in nationally known cases, stood beside the Erving family as they continued to call for a full investigation and complete accountability. Families often describe an arrest as only one part of the justice process because criminal cases still have to move through the court system before they are resolved.
At this point, investigators have arrested two individuals in connection with the case. However, the legal process is still ongoing, and the charges will be handled in court. As with any criminal case, the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
The Erving family says they will continue fighting for Mike and hope that every fact surrounding his death is brought to light. Their message was clear: while the arrests are a significant step forward, they believe complete justice will only come when the entire truth is known and everyone responsible is held accountable under the law.
