Everyone is criticizing Ben Crump for the way he presented the independent autopsy results in the Nolan Wells case. But honestly, I think people are focusing on the wrong thing.
You’ve got to understand that Ben Crump is not a doctor—he’s a lawyer. There is a big difference between the two professions. His job is to represent families, fight for their rights, and make sure their voices are heard. It is not his job to explain medical findings the way a forensic pathologist would.
The forensic pathologist who performed the family’s independent autopsy was unable to attend the press conference, so Ben Crump stepped in and presented the findings on the family’s behalf. Whether people liked the way he spoke or not, someone had to communicate the information. The important thing is that the family had someone standing beside them and advocating for them during a difficult time.
I think it’s really crazy that some people are more worried about how Ben Crump sounded than the reason he was standing there in the first place. Nobody is perfect. None of us have all the answers. None of us are experts in everything. But Ben Crump knows how to do the job he was hired to do, and that’s represent families who are looking for justice.
The facts speak for themselves. Ben Crump has represented the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tyre Nichols, and many other high-profile civil rights cases across the country. Families continue to seek him out because they believe he will fight for them when they feel like no one else will.
The Bible also reminds us not to judge people based on outward appearances or personal preferences.
John 7:24 (NIV) says:
“Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”
That verse fits this situation perfectly. Instead of judging how someone sounded during a press conference, maybe we should focus on what they’re actually trying to accomplish.
