Are y’all kidding me right now? I just read about that 17-year-old in Florida who claimed he got shot and kidnapped by four Hispanic men in a light-colored van—and come to find out, it was a whole hoax. A complete lie. I’m sitting here shaking my head because this is the type of nonsense that makes it harder for real victims to be taken seriously.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office had to issue a full-on Amber Alert Thursday night. Think about that. A whole community went into panic mode. Law enforcement, families, regular folks out here on Highway 484 in Dunnellon thinking there’s some dangerous situation with shooters and kidnappers running around. People were terrified, searching, worried sick. And it was all because of a text message this kid sent to his mom saying he’d been shot and kidnapped. Can you imagine the heartache she must have felt reading that?

And then for it to turn out to be fake? A hoax? I’m sorry, but that makes my blood boil. Do you know how many kids are actually missing right now? Do you know how many families pray for an Amber Alert like that to get the word out about their child? And this boy plays with people’s emotions, wastes resources, and stirs up racial profiling all at the same time. He specifically claimed it was four Hispanic men. You don’t think that puts innocent people in danger? You don’t think that feeds into stereotypes and gets the wrong people harassed by police? It’s disgusting.

I don’t care if he’s 17—he’s old enough to know better. This isn’t some harmless prank. Law enforcement calls it a “hoax,” but I call it reckless, selfish, and dangerous. It drains resources that could be used for real emergencies. It traumatizes a mother. It stirs up racial tension. And let’s not forget—he told people he’d been shot. That’s next level manipulation.

And what happens next time? What happens when another teen really is kidnapped and people think, “Oh, it’s probably another hoax”? This is why people lose faith in the system. Cry wolf enough times and when the wolf actually shows up, no one believes you.

This generation really needs to wake up. You don’t play with missing person cases. You don’t play with Amber Alerts. This isn’t TikTok clout chasing, this is real life. I hope there are some serious consequences for him because if there aren’t, then what’s to stop the next person from pulling the same stunt?

I’m glad the truth came out, but I’m furious it happened in the first place. Do better, people. Just do better.
