I’m honestly shocked right now. John’s Pass — our John’s Pass — is supposed to be a safe, friendly, beach-town vibe kind of place. Families come here for dolphin tours, locals fish, people shop and relax, and small business owners bust their tails to keep their doors open. And now? We’ve got counterfeit money floating around like it’s Monopoly cash. 😤

Captain Dylan Hubbard over at Hubbard’s Marina said it best — the pens didn’t even work, and their normal cash checks didn’t pick it up either. That means whoever did this wasn’t just some amateur with a printer in their basement. This was next-level the kind of fake money that can pass through your hands, through a cashier’s till, and even make it to the bank before somebody realizes it’s fake.

Like, think about that. The bank had to tell them the money was “scrubbed” and reprinted. So they took real bills, washed the ink off, and reprinted higher denominations on the same paper so it would pass tests. That’s not petty crime that’s calculated and cruel, especially toward small businesses still recovering from last year’s hurricane.

These business owners in Treasure Island and John’s Pass already have to fight to survive. Their insurance rates went up, tourism was shaky for months, and they’re dealing with inflation just like the rest of us. Then, when they finally start picking up business again, someone hits them with fake cash. 💔

It makes you wonder what’s really going on in this country. Between scams, fraud, and everything else, people are getting desperate but that doesn’t excuse it. And you know what? It’s not just the criminals who are to blame here. It’s also the system that keeps letting this kind of stuff slip through the cracks. Where’s the accountability? How are these fake bills making it all the way to coastal towns like ours without being flagged?

If our local sheriff’s office is investigating, good but I think we as a community need to do more, too. We can’t just rely on authorities who come in after the damage is done. Business owners should start working together — like, real teamwork to share updates, security footage, and even bill-checking tips. Imagine if all the local spots in John’s Pass had a group chat or forum where they could instantly warn each other: “Hey, watch out for this $100 that came in looking funny.”

It’s sad because this kind of thing breaks the trust we used to have. I remember when you could walk into a bait shop or a food stand here and everybody knew your name. You could pay with a $20, and no one thought twice about it. Now, even cash feels suspicious. That’s how far things have gone downhill.

This isn’t just about fake bills; it’s about the direction we’re heading as a society. We’ve got to wake up, stop ignoring the small signs of decay, and start protecting our communities before they get hollowed out completely.

I hope the sheriff’s office catches whoever’s behind this, but I also hope locals stay alert. Check your money, talk to your neighbors, and support these small businesses who keep John’s Pass alive. Because right now, they need us more than ever. 🙏
