Iโve been watching whatโs happening in downtown St. Pete, and these e-bike deaths arenโt just on drivers
Letโs be real the increase in e-bike and m-bike deaths in St. Petersburg, Florida, isnโt just some random coincidence. What a lot of people donโt tell you is that this mess comes down to both the negligence of the city and the people riding these bikes. Iโve been paying attention over the last few weeks, and when you go downtown, youโll notice something: everybody wants to make it seem like itโs always the driverโs fault. But let me be clear thatโs not always true.
Most of the time, these e-bike riders are flying out in front of traffic, weaving through cars like theyโre invincible. They act as if they canโt be hit, and that kind of arrogance is dangerous. When you play those games on a busy street, it can cost you your life. Iโve seen it too many times โ riders cutting through lanes, ignoring red lights, and thinking they can beat the cars. And when something tragic happens, the first person blamed is the driver, even though the person on the bike mightโve been the one causing the chaos.
And itโs not just the riders. Letโs talk about the pedestrians. Downtown St. Pete is so congested now that people just walk out into the streets like they own them. Theyโll step right in front of your car even when traffic is moving, and somehow itโs still the driver who gets side-eyed for being โtoo aggressive.โ No itโs people not paying attention, plain and simple.
What frustrates me the most is that officers in the city donโt seem to have control over whatโs happening. Thereโs barely any enforcement when it comes to pedestrians and bikers. No oneโs stopping these reckless riders who speed through intersections, and no oneโs ticketing the people walking into traffic. Itโs as if everyone downtown has decided that traffic laws donโt apply to them unless theyโre behind a steering wheel.
Let me paint a picture. Youโre sitting at a red light, waiting patiently like youโre supposed to. Then out of nowhere, a cyclist zooms past you and crosses the street on red. They donโt stop, donโt look, just go. But the moment they get hit or fall, itโs automatically the carโs fault. What these riders need to understand is that theyโre subject to the same traffic laws as everyone else on the road. When youโre on a bike โ electric or not โ you have the same obligation to stop at a light, yield when necessary, and follow the rules.
Until the city steps up and enforces the same accountability for bikers and pedestrians as they do for drivers, this cycle of tragedy is going to continue. Itโs not just about reckless driving itโs about reckless riding and walking, too.
Facts! I almost got clipped by an e-bike going the wrong way down a one-way street. I couldnโt believe it. Then when I yelled, he told me to watch where Iโm going! ๐คฆ๐ฝโโ๏ธ

Downtown is out of control lately. Itโs not just the bikers people walking with their phones in their faces are just as bad. They step right in front of cars like they canโt be touched.

This is so true. I got hit by a biker last month walking to a restaurant on Central Ave. He ran a red light and brushed right past me. Nobodyโs enforcing the rules for them.

I agree 100%! I live downtown and I see it every day. These e-bike riders zip through intersections like itโs a video game. No helmets, no stopping, no common sense. Itโs scary driving through there sometimes.
